G35 Coupe Trade In Value - Lowballed by Dealership?

Longtime lurker here in the forums, haven't posted but once or twice. I currently have a black 07' Coupe, Auto, Sport Suspension, everything stock, 21K miles on it. I'm looking to possible get a 2010 g37x.

I go to the dealership here (Tysons Corner, VA) this past weekend just to test drive the g37x and get some pricing on a trade in value on my current coupe. I'd rate my coupe in good condition (some swirling, light scratches) all from daily use, but no damage history or anything major.

I get an offer of $17K, which quite frankly surprised me as I saw a 06' coupe with more miles on it out on the lot that was stickered at $23,200. The best price they were willing to give me was $18,135.

Am I better off selling privately, or going somewhere else? Or am I just not being firm enough in my negotiations? I'm thinking with a nice detail, I could get in the $23K range for it.

Any input would be appreciated!

I think you would be better off selling it privately. Just put it on craigslist or any website and see if you get any offers. After that you can see where your getting a better deal and decide to either trade it in or sell privatly

1st: Dealerships always screw you, whether you're in for service, trade-in etc. they will try to screw you 100% of the time.

2nd: Sell privately, they are screwing you hard.

kbb value trade-in "good" is $21850 ....assuming you have 19"s and sunroof

The priv party sale value would be higher you can check it yourself....but you may have a difficult time getting book for it, since used G37's are available for around $25k.

Keep in mind that you save the sales tax on the trade in amount when you give it to the dealership.... so if they give you $20k and the tax rate is 7% it's really like getting $21,400 (20K + $1400 tax savings).

Why do people think dealers are trying to "screw" everyone?

its a business, they are there to make money

A dealer would not stay in business buying cars for $20,000 and then reselling them for $20,500

If you think you are getting screwed at a dealer, look up how much groceries cost VS what you pay.

Private party will get you more money but a dealer will buy it right now as is. No bs trying to meet people and show your car.

If you have a private buyer, do it.

If you cant wait, dealer.

as per Kbb.com

Excellent
$21,500

Good
$20,400

Fair
$18,450

agian, this comes into the business part.

Would you offer $21,500 or $18,450 if you were buying the car ???

They can probably buy the same car at auction for $16,000 - $17,000

Ive always traded in cars and Ive always taken a hit, but I did it because they take care of my old loans/liens/headaches and can usually get them to the price I wanted anyway.

private all the way man...

in these days, who can't use another 2 grand in the pocket??

don't be lazy and take many many pictures, detail the car, post to as many forums as you can, craigslist, car forums, facebook, twitter, and if you don't mind spending a little dough (which is worth the 2 grand I think), post on autotrader...

no matter how much people slash your prices, it's not gonna be 18 and some change man...you have almost a brand new car!

Your first mistake was talking to them about a trade-in before you got the numbers straight on the G37x. If they asked you should have said you haven't made the decision yet and may keep the other car. Then after you work out numbers with them throw in your trade-in at the last minute and tell them they got a deal if they meet you on what you're looking to get for the trade-in. So, IMO you should forget the dealer you're already working with and start over with another one.

Because they are? If you think $17k is a good offer for a 07 G35 with 20k miles on it, then you are one gullible sucker. Not to mention exorbitant maintenance work rates, quoting work that doesn't need to be done, trying everything in their power to deny warranty work and hoping the customer doesn't know any better, and you can hopefully understand where the reputation comes from. I would never let a dealer touch my car for non-warrantied work. Find a mechanic that you can trust, and it will pay off big time in the long run.

As far as your groceries comparison is concerned, if store 'A' sold food at normal prices and store 'B' sold everything at 4x the price and then added a bunch of bull**** fees when you got to the register, then yes I'd say that store 'B' was out to get you too.

The dealer has no reason to offer you more than fair/mid trade in value, when they can buy these cars at auction for less.

I think you might have had a bad experience with dealers.

I dont take my car to the dealer for normal services but the ones around me have quoted a decent price for most things.

Oil changes $30

Trans drain and fill $200

Of course you are going to save money if you DIY.

You pay more for the paper trail, the certified work, and the specialty dealer mechanics are supposda have on that make/model.

I agree some stuff can get high, but that's because they use genuine parts. Can you get them cheaper at Autozone, sure. But again, no paper trail for warranty work unless you keep up with your receipts.

If you don't like the price the dealer gives you, shop around

Try to sell it yourself unless you just really want the new car and dont care about a few grand. If thats the case just get the new ride and enjoy it

Dealerships see someone who wants to get out of a three year old car as someone who is willing to take the huge depreciation hit just to get the latest, greatest.

Yes, from now on Private Sell will be the way to go. I got lucky bonus of having fiance take over my previous car since I got lowballed at the dealer.

Craigslist is a great place to start, free and easy to use. My dad put his 98 eclipse on there and sold it within 2 days of posting. CL gets lots of traffic and you'd be surprised how much luck you might have with it.
