is the g35 vq engine supposed to sound like its about to explode?

A belt will hurt as much as a chain regardless. It's the interference vs non-interference engine that matters for what's broken.

If you're waiting until you see fraying and noise to replace a timing belt, you're in trouble. Most belts that need changing will never indicate it until you've pulled it off the car and have cut it open.

what does a chain take with it that a belt doesnt? Either way the engine is probably toast. Belts dont always give you warnings either...its the same both ways and they are both equally as detrimental to an engine.
