Sway bars

what is the difference in aftermarket v stock?

theoretically it's just tubular supports that are of same dimensions. I can't see how aftermarket sways will improve the car.

any information would be helpfull. Suggestions as to manufactuers welcome too.

Ah but they do improve your ride and how your G handles because unlike the OE sways most aftermarket are adjustable with three (3) holes and a larger diameter. (fat) My Stillen bars are set on the center hole. (Med) The next two mods that improve how she handles is adjustable endlinks and an upper strut bar that ties everything togeather....

Not all sway bars are "of the same dimensions." Some after-market sways are hollow, in which case you need to pay attention to the ID and OD. Other sways are solid. But as Gary said, most (not all, i.e. Cusco) sways are also 2 or 3 way adjustable.

I'm using Motordyne sways and I love them.

Hotchkis sways here and one of my favorite mods. Completely changes the handling characteristics of the car.

Not sure about the cost of MotorDynes sways but I relatively sure most sways run about the same + or - a few $$. I bought the Stillen sways cause at their open house they were offering free install and the price was reduced....and they work!

Hmmm heard you can get some Stillen sways for maybe $200 or a bit above. The MotorDynes are $300 . but haha guess I'll look around.

Sway bars are torsion springs. What feels like a heavy piece of solid metal to our wimpy human hands is actually flexible under the tremendous loads generated by a suspension. Aftermarket sway bars may be the same thickness, but that's not the important part, the important bit is torsional rigidity. The more rigid a sway bar, the more your car will "squat" in a turn, as opposed to rolling, the tradeoff being a harsher ride on bumpy roads and more of a tendency to follow road imperfections, like rain grooves. The adjustable versions with multiple mounting holes let you adjust the torsional rigidity by mounting different distances from the bar. (Imagine a U shaped spring. If you grab the tops of the U and twist, it resists less than if you grab in the middle).

You should ask yourself why you want stiffer sway bars. Are you driving your car in a way where body roll is currently limiting your performance? Maybe better improvements will come from tires, springs or shocks. For street driving, you don't really need new sway bars, but they'd be very useful on the track or auto-x
