Question Spacer Quiz

I'm currently running a stock 03 6MT G35 Coupe and am looking to put on a Motordyne spacer as a first cheap upgrade. I've found a lot of info in other threads on this topic, but there seem to be some conflicting opinions. So help me clear it up.

Here are my 6 choices (keep in mind that MREV is not an option since I do not have the "revup" engine):

1. Motordyne 5/16" Basic Spacer
2. Motordyne 1/2" Basic Spacer
3. Motordyne 5/16" ISO Thermal Spacer
4. Motordyne 1/2" ISO Thermal Spacer
5. Motordyne 5/16" Copper ISO Thermal Spacer
6. Motordyne 1/2" Copper ISO Thermal Spacer

I'm looking for opinions with regard to any or all of the following criteria:

1. Noticeable power difference between 5/16" and 1/2" spacers
2. Value of thermal or copper thermal technology over basic spacers
3. Effects on fuel economy - increase, decrease, by how much...
4. Do I have to cut or remove the stock engine cover
5. Difficulty of installation for a novice
6. Cost of installation at a shop or dealership
7. Warranty issues

Welcome any and all opinions. Thanks in advance!!!

I would suggest 1/2" for your application... I have it and am happy. If you had newer (Rev-up) 5/16" would be the choice... the OEM cover will fit - I suggest you invert the grommets. Or, do as I did and get a 1/2 cover (350Z) - you can trim to fit as well (I did this to a CF cover but don’t have pics right now) - fuel economy??? Don’t know - I drive spirited frequently so I am not too concerned about MPG (I avg 17-18 AT) It's not difficult to install, Tony has clear concise installation instructions. Warranty should not be an issue - many of us have the spacer and I have heard of no problems... It is easily removed to stock in case you need to take in for warranty. I have had my car to dealer for scheduled maintenance several times since having the spacer - no problems.

Hope this helps... There is a TON of info out here regarding ME spacers... search for it and you will have all the info you need to make an informed decision.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely going with the Copper ISO Thermal, but I'm still trying to decide between the 5/16" and the 1/2". I've done some more reading on this forum, and checked out the dynos on MD's website. I think I'll probably be happy with either one, so I'm trying to think long term.

I'm considering getting a TT or supercharger down the road, so will both spacer's be compatible? Or would I even want/need to have the spacer at that point?

Thanks.

according to MD's site, with the 1/2 spacer the stock engine cover will not fit.

actually, i got a relating question as well. Which of the following will be most compatible with FI system?
1. Motordyne 5/16" Basic Spacer
3. Motordyne 5/16" ISO Thermal Spacer
5. Motordyne 5/16" Copper ISO Thermal Spacer

stock cover will fit with 1/2"... talk to Tony directly and he'll tell you the same thing. Mine fit... The reason I went with 1/2 cover is to keep the plenum cooler - I have ME coolant control valve and holding in plenum heat with the full cover would defeat it's purpose... there are several informative threads out there... also Sport Z mag has had some write ups... just search and you will find all you need to know to make an informed decision.

Hey guys, newbie here; atleast to the G35 forum. Got my 04 Silver G35 Coupe last weekend and I love it. Definately want to add the spacer & Z-tube, but not sure about the increase in sound. How much louder is the 1/2" over stock?

Its definitly there. At least for me. Its both louder and deeper.

Some people say they cant hear it but the majority say they can.
I can hear them. ...I like the sound.
