Oil change question for the experts

I got my first synthetic (Pennzoil) oil change at 7900 miles at jiffy lube. The guy put a sticker on my windshield for next change mileage at 12900, exactly 5000 miles. He said i shouldn't do oil change too often if using synthetic.

I currently have 11500 milies on my car. I will be taking a long drive on memorial day (2000 miles), Is it too idea to do another synthetic oil change? I am thinking switching to mobil 1 synthetic at the dealership, anyone know how much they charge?

thanks.

I wouldn't woerry too much about having an extra 500-1000 miles with the current oil in the car. However, I wouldn't trust Jiffy Lube to do oil changes.

I would change my oil at the nearest dealership, because I wouldn't trust Jiffy Lube to actually put synthetic oil in my car. The changer guy probably just put the synthetic in his car and put the regular in your car, who can really tell if its synthetic or not in your car. And since it has been about 4000 miles, just change it because there could be some bad contaminents in your oil already.

If you are going to change your oil every 4K miles there isn't much point in putting in synthetic. Just a waste of money better to save it for gas

Not that I disagree with you, but I don't think they are that unethical. Are they as competent as a dealer; no. A Jiffy Lube grease monkey forgot to put the drain bolt back in my diff in a Miata that I owned, and a week later the diff seized.

Even with dino oil, you can still go about 5500 miles between changes. With synthetic, I now go 6500-7000 miles between oil changes. In the end, it all boils down to what you are comfortable in doing with your car.

man i know a lot of you guys hate juffy lube, but you are describe as if they are all cheaters.

actually my experience wasn't so bad, I watched they put 5 quarts of new synthetic oil into my car. The guy was pretty cool, he thinks my G35C was very hot, he's also about to trade in his altima for it.

I get synthetic oil because i like to drive hard once in a while. like 7-8k rpm ranges.

A synthetic oil change is kind of expensive at the dealership. I know that you have to specify that you want synthetic or they wont do it.

As to trusting Jiffy Lube, I guess I do, but not with my G. The same for the dealer with me though. The only sure way is to do it yourself. No one will treat your car as good as you will. Plus, you get to see how dirty the oil comming out is and if your getting five quarts out. It's not so hard.

For over 2 years I trust Jiffy Lube guys and watch how the pick brand new bottles of Mobil 1 and put in my G.
On other note, even if changing every 3k, synthetic makes sense since it does not leave residues in the engine and the engine will last another 100k without repairs. My old '95 Eagle vision already has 230k and runs 28mpg on highway. The only maintenance: spark plugs, water pump and timing belt.
There is nothing like synthetic oil.

My local dealer changes $80 for a Mobil One Syn. I just go to my local quick lube and they charge me $40 for M1 Syn after a coupon. I watch them put the bottles in so the last thing I worry about is bad oil. I always just make sure its the right type of oil they are putting in.

I'm not sure why some people don't trust the quick lubes; the dealers generally use the lowest paid employees to change the oil anyway, so its not like your getting someone special anyway.

there is a cheaper way, go to wallmart or similar place and buy 5 qts of whatever synthetic you want (cheaper if you can get one of those 5qt jugs) and give it to the dealer at the time of the oil change. doing this you can expect to pay $20-$30 tops. Call and ask for price of oil change if you supply your own oil.

Or go to a Nissan Dealer and pay the same amt of approx $25.00 incl tax, using the oil change coupon from nissanusa.com under service. However they use 5W30 Castrol Syntec blend.

The Nissan dealer here will accept the coupon. It does say it is extra for a 350Z, but since it has the Infiniti badge they didn't price it higher (not every Nissan dealer will do this, you have to find one). Great service, 2x oil change already.
