Generally speaking, the higher the compression of an engine, the higher octane gas you need. Even though higher octane gases burn less easily than lower octanes, the octane rating correlates to the amount of energy needed to overcome the chemical reaction of spontaneous combustion of the air-fuel mixture. Simply, higher octane gas is less likely to cause knocking. Thus, using higher octanes lets internal combustion engines run at a higher compressions without knocking.

Since compression is directly correlated to engine power, engines that require higher octane gas, generally are more powerful. So using the recommended octane rating makes the engine run at its optimal state. The octane rating acutally has very minimal effect on the power output of an engine, so using "racing fuel" has very little effect on the power of most cars-basically a waste of money unless your car heavily modified and tuned to maximize the use of this fuel.

So...if you plan on granny shifting, don't go up hills, and are leasing the car, then don't use premium gas. Otherwise, USE IT if your car recommends it, if it doesn't there is no need to use high octane gas.

Wow is this guy getting flamed and its only his 5th post. lol. But I think he figured out he should use premium. As a matter of fact, you really should only use Shell V-power.

I use midgrade. 89 octane. The engine wasnt made in the 60's. I have never heard any knocking or pinging and if im not drag racing every day why spend extra money(which does accumulate over the years and end up as a lot)? I've said this before, but even in my V8 BMW, in the manual, it specifically says its okay to use 87 octane gasoline with it.

Of course you will not hear pinging because it isn't the 60's!!! Timing is automatically retarded if any detonation is detected. The result, slightly less power and efficiency, but you save a few bucks.

But it does not say it's okay to use regular in the Infiniti manual, except short term if higher octane is not available. There are lots of luxury cars designed to use regular. Price or brand has nothing to do with it.

What's the worst that could happen? knocking? pinging?

gas is so damn expensive on this car!!!

thoughts?
USE PREMIUM... ----- What you gain on fuel costs, you'll lose in mileage....and take a chance of damaging the engine.
