Shift Knob Chipping....
Shift **** Chipping....
So I just found out that I am not the only one with the top of my shift **** (where the gear numbers are) chipping. I don't wear a ring on my right hand, however I do shift with my hand resting on top of the shifter, so that my hand is constantly rubbing the spot that is chipping off.
My question is: if you are having the same chipping problem, do you rest your hand on top of the shifter or the side? I am going to guess that the people with this problem rest their hand on the top and the people who rest their hand on the side do not.
By the way, this chipping just started at about 9500mi, so if you only have a few thousand miles, this might not start happening to you yet.
Please give me your input, its kinda annoying just because it looks sooo cheap!

jmweidm,
I am the one that you saw post up about the chipping shift **** problem...dude i have 1,820 miles on my car!!! and it has started!
The way my hand is positioned when i shift is like i am choking that little ball at the top of the shifter,,,,but i have my thumb placed over the the chipping part! so i am wondering if i have acid sweat or something..... but i place my thumb there not all the time...i some times also grab the shifter like i am one of those mechanical hands in those vending machines picking up a stuffed animal! like on the top, with the center of my palm touching the chipping part!

Re: Shift **** Chipping....
funny how twisted this thread could be getting but its not. ****......Choking.......hand placement........
Anyway, I guess we just got some bad paint or something. I am going to hit up the dealer for a new one. If they say no, I think I'm just going to try to chip it all off. That way it will look a little better.

Re: Shift **** Chipping....
Hey Guys,
I've noticed it too on my shifter. At first I thought my wife did it as she sometimes drives the car and sometimes wears rings on her right hand. But evidently from these other responses it looks as if this is a systemic problem. Its gotten progressively worse.
Can this be chalked up to normal wear and tear? I'm not sure how successful one is going to be if they pursue the dealership to change out the part. And even if they replace the **** with a new one, woh is to say that the chipping simple won't happen again?
Any thoughts guys
