ECU--is it true...

I heard somewhere that if you drive your G moderately the first so many thousands of miles, your ECU will adopt that and you COULD lose performance. I have a 6MT...please tell me they're wrong.

Re: ECU--is it true...

well ECU re-set will most likely will affect AT most.. not sure about MT but i heard not significant as At but MT loses little bit of performance... not sure though... but AT definitely gain performance after reset the ECU... especially right after the break-in period...

Re: ECU--is it true...

I don't like hearing this loss of performance on my 6MT... So I need to drive aggressive in the break in?...

I think what would be safer is to drive conservatively during break in, then reset your ECU after break in. :-) That way you don't kill you motor, but then after you break it in and still get the full potential of the engnie.

Re: ECU--is it true...

Well, the reason it adapts back to "almost" the original settings is because of the OBD II ECU. So if you were to get mods like I / H / E, it would be fine at first and you can feel the power, but wait after a couple hundred miles and the ODB II will re-learn itself. The reason people reset the ECU is to reset what the ODB II has learned with the performance mods placed on. Some people do it every week or 2 weeks. I have not heard of any issues with no modifications but i guess it wouldnt hurt resetting the ECU.

One way of resetting the ECU is to pull the fuse (if you can find the one that powers the ECU) and leave it off for 10-15 minutes or so, then let it idle for another 10 minutes with no accessories on. This is what i was doing on my Honda Prelude before. The second one that I think works as well (but i havent tried it) is the resetting through the gas pedal. Some guy from the my350z.com forum has done it on his car and also on a G35 auto. Here's the instructions: http://www.technosquareinc.com/350reset.htm
You can always get the Technosquare ECU update so that it wont re-learn itself and wont have to do the resetting anymore.

Re: ECU--is it true...

if you were talking about other cars then your correct but not for g... mostly AT g...ECU adapts your driving style and will be likely to decrease you performance... if you re set the ECU you will feel the lost power back on regardless of new mod... g owners re set ECU because it's
1) you got new mod and want ECU to learnt it
or
2) AT g owners who wants to let ECU to relearn the driving style... during that time it will be noticebly faster(from my experience)however while let ECU relearns your driving style, if you do it right then no need to reset again near future(unless you baby it again for long time)

easiest way to reset is disconnect the battery for 4hours(i did it for 4hours and worked great).. anybody tried less time and worked?

Re: ECU--is it true...

randyhurtado - well, the car is adaptive leaning on your driving habits. so i say baby it until you pass the break-in period and then mash on the gas and keep that as your habit.

uheenada - ok, i know what you are talking about. youre talking about the adaptive learning that the ECU does according to your driving habits. I was referring to the ODB II computer. Thanks.
