Speared by a 12" steel bar at 60 mph !!!

While travelling on the higway today, a pickup truck with an open flat-bed was two cars ahead of me. He hit a bump and a piece of steel went flying off, bounced and flew over the car in front of me and speared my car at approx 60 m/h. I had no chance to change lanes or brake without endangering everyone else on the road - so I braced for impact and wham - the whole car shook. When I stopped, I couldn't believe the piece was stuck in there like that.

I'm lucky it didn't hit the drivers side windshield because I probably would require reconstructive surgery of some sort... or worse. The garage estimates $1,000 to fix the bumper. D@mn !!!

Yep, the quote is for a new one. And the steel was stopped by the aluminum bar. Lucky it wasn't higher into the grill and radiator/pulleys/engine.

Did you get any info from the truck that had that thing in it...you can go after them for the costs for not securing their cargo properly.

You're right, I wish I had got his license plate but I was in a bit of shock and pulled over right away, only to go into greater shock from seeing this frickin' hugh steel bar sticking out. I called the police but of course, there was nothing to report except a hole in my bumper. At least it wasn't in my chest. I wish people would be smart about transporting things in their trucks....

Thanks folks.

Yeah, you often hear of these things flying up and going thru the windshield....with devastating results.....

Sounds like it didn't go into the radiator or condenser.......

Glad to see you're ok.

C.
