Long post, have to vent! (THEY HIT MY CAR, BUT I HANDLED IT!!)

As I was getting ready to exit a parking lot, the car in front of me was taking too long to make the right turn since there was no cars coming. Finally when she decides to go, she notices all the cars coming her way since the light for them turned green (we were in a corner parking lot, attempting to turn right)

So when she sees this, she puts in reverse and gives me little time to backup myself to avoid being hit, and although I moved a bit, she still backed right into my car. I, obviously upset, honk at her and signal her to back up now to assess the damage. But either she didn't understand or wanted to completely ignore me so she looked away and was still about to pull away and leave. Therefore I got out of my car and walked up to her window and told her that she needed to back up and that if she was planning on leaving, I'd call the police and report a hit and run. So she decided to do so and we backed into the lot. I got off and noticed that while the damage wasn't major at all, she did scratch the front bumper and dinged it a little. And the fact that my G is Obsidian Black doesn't help the fact since it's a delicate color.

I asked to see her DL and insurance to determine if she wants to go that route, or just pay to fix it. Then she says those magic words: “I don't have a DL or insurance... it's my dad's car!!"

You can imagine the added frustration that caused me. Anyhow, she went back inside to the small restaurant she came out of, and called her uncle. Her uncle comes out and tries to play it off as nothing and says, "You can't even see it, why you making a big deal out of it"? Needless to say, that really ticked me off. Not only was the driver ignorant enough to backup without checking her mirrors, she's driving without a DL and insurance, but now they want to minimize it as if nothing happened. To them of course nothing happened, she was driving an old green ugly Ford Taurus!

Now her uncle goes across the lot to a body shop with whom he's friends with the owner and calls him over. The guy says that to fix it should be between $150 and $650... and that if I said it's more I was trying to rip them off. I replied that I'm not in it to try and rip anybody off, but I want to take it to my own body shop and let them fix it.

So now the uncle gets upset himself saying that what I want to do is screw him over and does one of the most hated things to me: he plays the race card. He, like me, is Hispanic and starts to say that I'm trying to take advantage of my own people and that it's people like me that make it impossible for them. That' when I had heard enough!!

I told him that if that was the case I would've called the police the second it happened which would really screw things up for them. Not only would they most likely impound the car since it was being driven by someone without a DL and insurance, but the fine that goes along with that is hefty, in addition to having to pay my damages. Then he says that couldn't happen because he was the one driving and he does have a DL and car insurance. I told him, "what the heck are you talking about... it was the girl (pointing at her) driving?!" When he realized the stupidity of his comment, he tried and correct it by saying that all they were doing was moving the car from one spot to the next. Again I called him out on it and said that wasn't true since she was already making a right out of the driveway and had two passengers with her. Who has passengers when you're just moving the car from one spot to the next?!

Again, not knowing what to say he said, "go ahead and call the cops... they can't do anything." I told him not to make me do that.. I don't want to make it worse for them. Of course, this whole time he keeps saying how all I want is to take advantage of my own kind.

So when he finally saw me get on the phone, he pulled out his wallet and briefly showed me his DL. He had refused to show it to me before when I requested it! So he pulled it out, but only for a brief instant and pulled it away. However, one good thing I've always been able to do is memorize things quickly... so when I asked him for his DL # and he refused, he was totally shocked when I repeated it back to him.

Anyhow, I ended up driving to my own body shop, had my friend make an estimate and told him to please make it an honest, honorable estimate. Total? $413.20... I told him it wasn't going to be much.

But still, when I came back and showed it to the uncle and his body shop friend from across, they still try to lowball me with an offer of $300 on the spot. Again, I reiterate the fact that I'm not pocketing anything here... I just want to fix my car where I want to fix it... that's all! In fact, I told them, I'm still losing because I could've gone to work instead of having to deal with this crap and on top of it all, I'm going to have to pay for a rental car while my car is being fixed.

So anyhow, finally after about two hours, he coughed up the $413.20, but still wasn't content and kept insisting that all I wanted was to take advantage of one of my own that hasn't made it like I have. He said, "I can't afford nice clothes and a nice car... and if you can live taking advantage of your own people... so be it!"

I couldn't believe this... I'm trying everything in my power to make it as easy and affordable for this guy... sparing him the problems of having the Police come over or have my own insurance take care of it... I'm also gonna be out on money from my own pocket... and it's me taking advantage of him!! That's what's wrong with the world today.

Most of the time we victimize ourselves and don't want to own up to our own faults... it's always the other party/person/nation/group/whoever’s fault!!

Sorry guys for the INCREDIBLY LONG post but I had to vent! Thanks to those of you guys/gals that hear me out.

I think you handled the situation pretty well, should've taken more money from him imo.

I would've called the cops on them the second he started giving me attitude. They were definitely lucky they ran into you. A lot of people would not have been so calm.

I am glad everything worked out for you, but wow that uncle guy is one A-hole. You should've just called the cops and let that girl get cited and towed for driving w/o DL or Insurance and teach her a lesson the hard way. Or was the girl hot?

I love the story, and nice writing. You have handled the situation very well, this is what should happen and they need to be punished. No DL and no Insurance sorry it won't happen.

You did well, if you had called the cops, they (tarus chic & the man from Uncle) would have been screwed, you would have been screwed and NOBODY would be happy. This way, you got your car fixed, you don't have to BS with the higher rates your insurance company would have charged you. They don't have to pay HUGE fines and get their car impounded.

So at least your (somewhat) happy.

Good work.

Yeah, I hear what you guys are saying. I know that I could've with complete right, received or gone after more money and completely messed them up. It's just that, I couldn't do it... I couldn't let myself do that to them, when there are others out there, that DO have serious problems, while all I'm facing is a dented bumper! Even though they were surely asking for it, especially the uncle since the girl really didn't even say a word after telling me she had no DL or insurace (and no she wasn't hot!).

What really bothers me, though, is the fact that some people (not everybody) know they're breaking laws, and on top of it all, when they get caught they want to put the blame on others and simply not man up! It's not right! Deep down I know I'm entitled to more since, like I said, I will still incur an expense due to having to get a rental, and I could've let my insurance handle it, or totally screwed him by calling the cops.

And to top it all off, (I didn't mention this in my original post) the small restaurant from where the uncle came out of is his... he owns it! I know, I know what you guys are saying... "more the reason to go after him hard". But, it's just that I wish we could all just get along . And while he obviously had no intention in doing so, and was outright almost provoking me to ruin his weekend, I couldn't let others' behavior and way of being, take me out of MY zone and my personality and way of dealing with things... because then, morally, he would HAVE gotten the best of me.

Like I said in the original post, I really wanted to vent and it feels good to read that you guys feel I did good. I know that even by pursuing this and getting the law/insurance involved, I still would've done good... but you guys cheered my up by showing me that someone does see that I TRIED to do the right, honorable thing. Thanks fellow G35Drivers!!

Kudos for not freaking out...I would have been calling the cops pronto!! Of course that might have been worse, if the cops didn't respond or didn't do anything...then you would be like, "what the f__k?"

What's wrong with people?? Don't people have respect for other's property?

Well, at that point I already had the man's DL# and car's license plates. I had also already warned them that if they did try and leave, I would report a hit and run and then really make it bad for them.

On top of it all, as I said in my previous response above, the uncle owns that small restaurant, so I know he would've been there eventually if he would've taken off.
