You should get a crappy, safe first car so you can get into the inevitable fender benders and not worry too much. I don't think its as much an issue of speed vs. the ability to control the teenage urges.

My first car at 15 was a 98 Volvo with 120,000+ miles until I got hit, then got a BMW 5-series until 150,000+ miles and just got my new G35 for Graduation (18). I still have that tendency to want to show off, but I've got a LOT of miles under my belt haha.

I've got a good example...

I know a girl that got a hot red Mercedez CLK Convertible for her 16th birthday (probably 60K) and proceeded to drive it down her flooded street - the car was a complete loss.

And guess what...she got a new one...but this one had XM radio

My first car many years ago was a Camaro. I would not get my child a car like that or a G35 for a first car. The car has more power and braking than the average person needs, and I found that the Camaro taught me a false sense of security with the brakes. In some situations the G35 would be fine for a first car. But in general I'd say no.

$50,000 or even $20,000 is not alot for some people. But for others that is a yearly salery. It depends on the person. Someone could ask you, Why did you buy a PS3. When you could of bought a PS2 for cheaper.

Also maybe he paid for it himself.

Maybe some of our parents care about safety, and a G35 is top notch in that category.

Thought you paid 15k? if im not mistaken an 05 coupe should go for around 24-25k Even still if i paid for my whole car, it would be gone in a second if i ever got arrested for underage drinking or smoking or some crap.

G35>Crappy old Civic if a car hits you.

I like having confidence in my braking as well. Why WOULDNT you want good brakes? Id want my kids to have them...

True! I told my mom about the upgraded brakes in the sport package and how they are a safety must-have!

I was 17 when i got my first car..i got a BMW 525i that i thought was fast because it was the Ultimate driving machine. some guy hit me with it and totaled it and at 18 i got a g35 coupe..i say start out with a good car 1st..doesnt have to be cheap just not necessarily sporty. cant tell yu how many times i was pressured to race kids at my high school.

A nice but good handling and safe lower hp car. Seriously I did some dumbass **** when I was 16. I passed people all the time and blew stop signs and stuff just because my other dumbass friends did it too and never got in an accident.

I've been in 2 accidents, 1 small one where it was the lady's fault, and one with a good friend which is mutual fault, and I'm glad I drive a kinda ****ty car.

Go with some other car, like a 1999 Acura TL. Great first car, still kinda fast, low insurance, and luxurious, and I think safe. Then move up to the G.
