Question Oil leak on top of engine - help a new owner please.

I bought a 2004 G35 6MT with CAI 8 months ago. I recently noticed a oil burning smell...but only if I am stopped on an incline. It turns out I have some very dirty oil pooling on the drivers side of the engine up near the fuel injectors that drips past the oil dipstick, (and apparently) down onto the exhaust. It looks really dirty & old to actually be the current oil since I changed the oil 2800 miles ago to Mobil 1 10k synthetic. I also checked the oil level and its not down very far at all either.

So what's that high up on the engine with oil in it ??? I've never owned an Infiniti before and was wondering if there was a PCV or oil pressure sensor in that location ???

Thanks for any advice or hints to check when I get a flashlight and/or time to pull the engine cover.

Best advice I can help you is buying a bottle of simple green and try to wash off the oil and dirt that stick on the engine first. It maybe spillage from the previous owner. If you see new oil after that, then just bring to a certified mechanic to check it out for you (free), could be some old gaskets.

updated - more clues

OK, just grabbed a flashlight and checked better....I didn't realize the area around the fuel injectors was black plastic looking by nature.....turns out its either leaking from the front of the driver's side valve cover gasket or the oil dipstick itself...anyone else have an oil leak in this area ???

leaking driverside cover gasket is actually somewhat common. Dealer may have a bulletin on that.

Pull the dipstick and check the plastic and rubber seal at the top. These dipticks take an act of congress to put in and out and they can crack or break easily...causing the leak.

Dipstick may be appropriately named

I have to agree that the dipstick is very difficult to be sure its in correctly, and with the large diameter of the Injen CAI its even harder !!! I bought some Simple Green MAX to clean off the oil and I am just waiting for my garden hose to un-freeze so I can spray it off....maybe this weekend. I ordered a leftside valve cover gasket from Autozone for $11 just in case once I've pulled enough parts off to see where its coming from I can swap out the gasket while I'm in there.

I really would hate to think I've been driving around with my dipstick slinging oil for several thousand miles....

I heard of a few VQ's that leak oil around the valve cover gaskets, more likely due to loose hold down bolts.
Try tightening them.

My dipstick causes a leak... I have been meaning to get one. I have a collection of dirty oil around the dipstick that I still need to clean off. I never get an oil burning smell though. It might have just spilled before but I think the dipstick rubber seal is bad now.
