Outside Temp Display...

Okay, here is the second bug I've found in my car in the 2 weeks I've had it. I was just sitting outside in my car here in Atlanta where the temp (according to weather.com) is 73°. My center console display where it says the outside temp said 87°!!!! And that's with the engine OFF! What's up with that? Anybody else notice this?

Re: Outside Temp Display...

I know there's been a few with problems with the temp display. The dealer could help with that if that's the issue.
Is it possible that the temp sensor was being affected by the proximity of the hot engine?

Re: Outside Temp Display...

No, the car had been sitting turned off for like 3 hours prior to me getting in, and even then I was running on ACC, the engine wasn't on. A 14° variation from actual temp sounds like something I need to tell the dealer about...

Re: Outside Temp Display...

Where is weather.com getting their readings from? Temps can differ from one area to another. I am sure their reading was not of the whole area, just where the station is. Same thing with the G temp. Mine is always about 3-4 deg off from what weather.com says. Here, they pull the temp from a near by airport, but I live like 20 miles from that and its always different. Just a thought

Re: Outside Temp Display...

I agree that a variation of a few degrees is well within the norm..but 14? LOL I think that's pretty indicative of a problem. It was about 7:00 PM (after sunset) so there is no way it was even close to 87° outside.

Re: Outside Temp Display...

I've noticed that sometimes my temp sensor reads exceedingly high when the car's been sitting, too. Usually when it's been sitting out in the sun or next to my office building where the sun reflects off the windows. After I get moving, though, it drops to a realistic reading. I think a lot can affect the sensor when the car is parked besides the ambient temperature, such as heat radiating off the concrete, or the sun reflecting off the car or nearby walls. I haven't checked the manual on this, but I'll bet it says something to the effect that the sensor is only accurate when the car is moving. Just a guess, though.

Re: Outside Temp Display...

I don't think its a bug as much as a reset that the sensor goes through each time you start your car.

Sometimes in the morning the temp outside is in the low 40's and until I actually drive my car a little it does not give an accurate reading either....

In the summer the temp is greatly increased..I think it gets a temp reading off the pavement or something....anyway most of the time its pretty accurate with what I hear from my local radio stations.....I just think its not as "instant" as we would all like it to be....2old4this

Re: Outside Temp Display...

it happened to me once and after i start the engine and drove about 200-300 ft the temp quickly change back to normal.btw, please use the thermometer to gage your temperature, not weather.com. they don't know the exact temp where the car park at your house

Re: Outside Temp Display...

that's what it is. direct sunlight on the sensor. like you sitting outside in the sun. it will read higher of course.

Re: Outside Temp Display...

Same thing happens to my car. The temp always reads higher when I first start it up after its been sitting a while. Then it drops to the normal temp in a few minutes. I've watched it drop between 10-15 degrees in a matter of 3-4 minutes.

Re: Outside Temp Display...

If you were driving in traffic, its because you were in traffic. Exhaust fumes, other cars = higher temps, if you were sitting in traffic, id believe up to a 20 degree difference on a thermo. Every vehicle I've owned has had a thermo, and they take atleast 10-15 minutes from when the cars been sitting in the sun till the car actually knows what the temperature is. Even when the cars off, theres still enough juice going through the car that it keeps track of the temperature (or atleast so I've noticed with my other cars) and because of this, it believes its always warmer than it is till you start moving.

Re: Outside Temp Display...

g35maniac... is the console display still off with its temperature reading even after 10 minutes of driving? mine was like that. parked in the garage overnight. next morning, i start the car and the console says 89 when it is nowhere near that (this was during late fall weather). kept reading 89 well into my commute and didn't change until maybe 15-20 minutes later.

reported it to the dealer. and here was my problem:
TSB# 02-072
NOV 2002
Instruments - Ambient Temperature Display Inaccurate

they replaced the temperature sensor and some other things (sorry, can't remember). the parts weren't in stock so they had my car for an extra day. the display has been ok since then.
