idle is sooo low!!! '03 coupe 6mt

hello there,

when i have my AC off. my idle is below 500. maybe even 200 or so. and i almost stall many times!! is this normal???

i hope i didnt damage my engine when i misshifted from 3rd to 2nd on the 1/4 mile. im completely stock so the rev limiter should of come on so i assumed my engine was ok. friends checked it out and didnt see nothing bad.

the first line actually signifies 500 rpms, so technically 200 must be an estimation by you. If your idling at two lines above the first line, its 700. 700 is pretty normal for our vq engine. Dealership time, its under powertrain warranty still.

200? I have a hard time believing that. Take a picture of your idle and post it up.

200 would be an automatic stall. Factory idle is around 600. With my breathing mods, that was still too low. I raised it to 850 RPM thanks to Rookie (used his Cipher).

It happend to my 03 once. The dealership had to "re-program" my idle.

Take it to a reputable shop and and have a full pressurized fuel injection system clean performed if you have over 25K, if not and you are sure you have good premium fuel, your going to need to take it to the dealer for adjustment.

I bet if it's over 25k the cleaning will work and you will be so impressed on how well it runs and the efficiency you will regain.

On the flipside, my idle is roughly around 1200 rpms (~2-3 mins after start). Mind you I bought my car in the winter and havent driven in it in above 10C weather yet. Also, when I shift into reverse for instance, the rpm drops to around 7-800 or so.

Wow, 1200 seems high... Mine is steady 600-650 after it warms up, but automatics are usually closer to the 800-900 range (the ones I've driven)... 1200 will waste fuel etc. Maybe you should have that adjusted.

Dude, from what you've described, your idle is at about 600, which is perfectly normal.

The first tick above 0 is 500 RPM, the second is 600...

Have you driven a CTS-V and a Ford Mustang GT? Just to name two cars off the top of my head that I've driven with much heavier clutches than the G...

Yes, since the tach does not start at zero, your actually in the correct range... This is normal for a manual.
