Another angle on the ECU Reset Debate
Another angle on the ECU Reset Debate
Well, after reading many many many posts on here about this subject, I figured, hey, lemme give all the methods a try. At first (about a month, 1500 miles ago) I did the Easy ECU reset. Saturday I did the disconnect the battery reset. Both times, I came to the same conclusion. For everyone who believes we get some type of a "performance gain" out of resets, this is the same illusion that being slammed into your seats equals fast. Our cars operated on throttle by wire (drive by wire) Im sure you all know what it means and have heard it 100000 times over so I won't waste time on details. When I reset the ecu both times, I instantly noticed the car was more responsive to gas pedal inputs, but not at all in performance. Also, where as I used to have to put a little effort into revving to 1st gear, now resting my foot on the pedal produces 1000+ RPMs with almost no pressure behind my foot. Perhaps both methods reset the sensitivity of the throttle by wire system, and this increased reactiveness to inputs is what has been called on here "The ECU reset performance gains". Hopefully this will spark off a huge debate because this has been drilling my mind since Sunday morning.

Hmm thats an interesting theory to consider..indeed....

Re: Another angle on the ECU Reset Debate
There are several methods to reset, but there are also several kinds of reset. ONE of those resets, resets the pedal to "zero" when there's no pressure. Maybe this is what you noticed. Another reset will recalibrate the throttle body valve, another reset will clear out error codes, and I imagine a full blown deprivation of electricity will reset the TCU as well.
I think maybe you're onto something ex250. Maybe the illusion of HP is simply a matter that they throttle pedal has become out of calibration.
What I REALLY wish Nissan would address is that sucky sensitive brake pedal. Why can't they make THAT drive by wire and why can't they make it adjustable. I hate how sensitive it is.

Guys, guys... I've been saying all along that the only difference might be a change in the throttle response. This is the ONLY thing that makes sense to me...

Hrm I figured this would have sparked off more of a debate than this, usually people are pretty responsive on this subject.

Re: Another angle on the ECU Reset Debate
FU u R DumB! I reset my ECU yisterday and gaind ovr 1,693,659hp so you am stupid!!!! Is that any better? .
Actually I'm just kidding. I honestly believe that there are quite a few people on this message board who are not extremely mechanically inclined. They read posts and believe what people tell them (this isn't a bad quality and I often find myself doing the same thing). Unfortunately, it hasn't been until lately that DED, -Fish, myself and a few others have been either doing a little reading into the understanding of the ECU or applying some working logic to this topic. It appears that the results from the reading, combined with some "general logic" leads one to believe that there is NO horsepower gain what-so-ever from resetting the ECU. This doesn't mean that the throttle response will not change, not does it mean that someone will not like this change, but it simply cannot be related to increased hp.
There was a post going around where someone gained 2 whoppin' horse power after resetting the ECU on their G35. Geesh, 2 whole horse power. What kind of repeatability do you think machines like dyno's actually have. Under 1%, No way possible. Heck, you have SO MANY FACTORS that are CONSTANTLY changing, that if you do 5 different dynos back to back, you'll get 5 different readings.
There, if that doesn't start a war, nothing will, unless you directly insult those who believe in the gospil of the ECU reset, which I refuse to do.

Re: Another angle on the ECU Reset Debate
Hahahaha I didnt want a war on my hands. I just made an observation that I hadn't seen brought up yet on the boards and wanted to see what the two sides of the debate's opinion was. However, if it's going to start another war...Ill just retract the post, we already got enough of those goin as it is.

Neff, quit involving me in your wars!!
There are some things that the ecu can learn. Tranny shifts in an auto is one.
Message to CG,
Like BG and MS and the PC trying to help me, I hate my car learning. I know what I want it to do. Please don't make my car guess what I want to do.
There are a few learning algorithms that an ecu reset may help in the short term. If any of these help, that would mean that you normally drive like a BP.
So anyone that says an ecu reset helps, IMO that means they drive like a BP.
How's that?

The only half I understand is that I now owe him a few beers for using his name in vain. LOL (notice the delicate use of pronouns in this post..)
