Re: tiptronic

i did try it out in fact...hmm..how should i say it...its nice...i like auto...its more comfortable..but...purely based on the mechanics..i don't see how anyone can claim that its as good as a manual car....
i believe that the MM mode is there for a reason...the only thing i can think of is when you try to drop a gear if needed....but thats about it...and it DOES have a lag...i tried

Re: tiptronic

Not a bad one with a reset ecu or some ground wires. I hated MM before the 10 wire kit and the ecu reset is really where it's at.

Re: tiptronic

No one can speak on MM mode accurately until you have driven the car beyond the break in period and have mastered how to use MM mode.
Bottom line is: however it happens, the coupe is somehow quicker and a better performer in MM mode. Also 1st gear sometimes shifts at 6100 RPM in D mode.

Don't know exactly what's going under the hood, but have the AT coupe drivers noticed that the car sounds different in MM mode while idling? When you switch from D to MM you can hear a psshhhh sound from the engine area. Go back to D and it stops. You can notice it most when you are at drive thrus or near a wall where the sound of the engine echos off the wall. I tried this on a loaner Sedan I had and didn't hear a difference. I let the service tech listen and he said that was the first time that he noticed it but that everything checked out fine with the tranny.

Re: tiptronic

Wow, I definatly thought the gas mileage was better in MM mode. I'm pretty sure thats what a dealer told me a couple years ago when I was test driving a car, i think it was an eclipse...anyways, thanks for the tip, ive been driving down the interstate and shifting it over to MM mode for 50 miles without changing gears, just because I thought I was saving gas.

Re: tiptronic

Once again....Ill restate this...The car does not gain performance because you are shifting it. The engine doesnt function differently because you are shifting it. MM is meant to pass people on the highway quickly, and it will always get worse gas mileage, because youre going to a lower gear than an automatic typically would. As I said, the only performance gain you can feel is if D shifts lower than 6600 rpms, which as you said, in D in 1st it shifts at 6100....theres your .2 at the track. The thing is, no matter what you do..you cannot 'slam' a gear in MM. There will always be a delay as automatic transmissions are built with comfortable shifting in mind. Even in BMW's SMG 2 system, there is still noticeable lag of putting the car into a lower gear and the transmission actually engaging that gear. Oh yeah and the ECU reset more than likely makes two parts in the tranny reset, which was what was modified in my previous S-10's 4L60E. Two sensors, one controlling the "pulsing" in the transmission and one controlling the fluid level when shifting were changed to make the shifts harsher. Very damaging to a transmission, did make the truck feel "faster" but it wasnt. Same misconception as slammed back in a seat = fast.

Re: tiptronic

Good points EX250. I do understand the view points of the AT drivers though. I drove a friend's AT sedan the other day and I must say that it is much funner than your average AT car. I would not give up my MT for it ever, but that's just personal preference. Clutch pedal for life. =)

Re: tiptronic

So im guessin the majority rule for this post is that tiptronic is faster then normally just slamming the pedal while your on D?? Even if its only a little faster.

Re: tiptronic

EX250, I think that all are fully aware that engine doesn't gain power from shifiting it in MM mode. But the tranny does perform differently in MM mode on the coupe. The shifts are more direct, although a little more harsh. Whether or not that is contributing to better 0 - 60 times is up for debate. Also flooring an auto in D will drop the car to the lowest gear in mose situations. There is reaction time however because the tranny is reacting after you engage the accelerator. The only difference with downshifting in MM mode is that you can chose the gear before engaging the accelerator allowing the power of a lower gear to be readily available more quickly. Again, those who have more experience with the auto in the G can probrably better understand the POV being shared here. Similar to the way that although most auto drivers fully understand the basic concept of MT's in general, likewise I think that most would agree that there are many things as regards the performance of the MT tranny in the G that we do not fully understand.
