i calculate when its time to fill up. no navi.
when i drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas driving at speeds from 75-120mph i avg 28 mpg.
Once i got to vegas didnt drive my car at all, filed tank back before leaving Vegas. Calculated my mpg that way.
overall driving for me including street driving i avg from 17-21 mpg depending on how heavy or light migh foot is on certain days.

Overall, the most effective way of getting the most MPG out of my vehicles was planning my routes, especially on the work week and knowing the traffic on the weekends. As well as keeping up with my vehicles maintenance schedules. Saving at the pump by means of Costco helps a lot too.

Bump up the pressure in your tires, don't buy anything with ethanol, keep it under 70, don't go routes with lots of traffic and always take the highway over roads with lights.
Or better yet just don't drive. That's what I've been doing a lot of. I tend to not worry too much about the mileage when I'm driving (might as well have fun in a sporty car), and just not drive when I don't have to (ride with others, make fewer trips, walk, et cetera). The "mpg" doesn't improve, but the overall gas savings is huge.
And for all those saying "sell the G35 and buy another car, blah blah blah" well you're going to kill yourself in the cost of the transaction #1, and then you're likely taking a hit on the depreciation of the G35, and with the market for little cars you're paying a premium for an econobox. By selling the G35 and buying something else, you're taking a few thousand dollar hit that could go a long ways toward buying a lot of gas.
It's the same reason it makes no sense to buy a prius. The five or so grand you'd save by opting for a corolla or civic (which is arguably a nicer car) over the battery powered prius completely negates the gas savings of the prius.
