6th gear giving me issues..need advise.
I've noticed lately that the car is sort of fighting me through the gears, specifically 4th and 6th. From a dead stop I raced a Mustang GT (spanked that car about 3-4 lengths the whole way) and all was good till I tried to shift into 6th. The shifter wouldn't engage and kept popping into neutral. So I try again and it still wouldn't go. I had to slow down and slam it into gear. Thinking this was a one time thing I tried it today on the way to work, taking it easy through the gears up till about 80. Then dropped it to 4th, hit the gas and went to put it into 6th and it wouldn't engage! I'm having my seat repaired in a couple of weeks at the dealer. Is this something I should have them take a look at as well?? HELP!

Was gonna say the same thing. Check the fluid for metal, if it's clean have them change the fluid to see if the problem improves. If there is metal they owe you a new transmission.

I am having a similar problem. It has actually started grinding when shifting into 6th. This hasn't happened until this last month. My Coupe has 23k miles. What fluid do I check?

Several questions...
1. What rpm are you at while trying to shift into 6th gear? I've found that if I skip 4th or 5th and go directly to 6th that the gears will not engage until the tach (rpm's) drop to about 3000. Anything higher and I hear GGGRRRRIIIINNNNDDDD, even with the clutch fully depressed.
2. Why on earth would you ever shift into 6th gear in a race? 5th gear will take you past 140 mph and that's your 1:1 gear. 6th gear is only for getting better gas mileage.
3. Definitely change your oil, tranny and diffy fluids at 15,000 miles.

I was already 3 car lengths ahead of him by 4th gear. I'd proven my point and I was running up on traffic so decided to shift into 6th. I was definitely higher than 3000 rpm's when jumping from 4th to 6th. Always change my oil at 3K miles with synthetic religiously. Tranny and diff fluids haven't been done yet. Might have the dealer do that in a couple of weeks.
