Auto Tranny Performance

My car only has ~270 miles on it so I haven't been driving it hard. With VDC off will the auto chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift, maybe in manual mode?

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

If your tires are bald enough, your modded and its really cold weather to give you the extra boost between gears it could happen. Has happened to me in my sedan once or twice but under those conditions, and considering you have coupe and its new you prob dont have either =).. It prob is possible though but not like a manual chrip. Drive your car a little harder during breka in but not too hard. It helps out believe me!!

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

With VDC off, I rolled the car in 2nd gear real slow, (<10mph) then stab the throttle and the car chirped all the way to redline. Crazy torque.

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

no way in an auto can you spin the tires on a 1 to 2 shift unless the ground is wet or lots of loose gravel on a straight path. The only posibility is if you're coming out of a tight turn and the weight transfer is enough to unload a rear corner.

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

DH is pretty rite, it happened to mine when the roads werent soaking but were damp from the rain an hour before. In second gear smoking the tires in an auto to redline is IMPOSSIBLE!!

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

I believe what Sukairrain said was he chirped the tires all the way to redline- not that he smoked them. I experience this regularly with my AT coupe (unmodded). I enter an intersection in 2nd and then stab it when lined up out of the turn and the rear is definately loose. He may be exagerrating a little, but I can tell you with the VDC on it ends the fun quickly because the traction is coming and going. There is definately no comparison to a stick and usually I find that the manual mode on the auto offers no harder shifting than leaving it in 'D'.

Only way you will see if you are satisfied is to wait until you are comfortable with the break-in and then try it out. I know I was not disappointed with the AT- especially when sitting in traffic down in LA. I only yearn for the stick when driving the canyons and such.

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

until i know that the 5AT can stand the punishment... i'm not chirping anything.

i already have a bad enough -BANG- from 2 - 1 when slowing down...that it sends chills down the spine.. knowing that few more times like that ... and i will see MY OWN tranny in a rear view mirror.

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

I would never shift from 2-1 its not neccessary as the tranny will start from a stop at 1 regardless of what you do. The guys above who spun to redline probablt did just that - his tranny dropped into 1 from flooring it or completely stopping and then spun his tires like mad.

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

Oh yeah, I thought I should mention that I wrote my earlier post when slightly inebriated. I should have wrote that I have broken the rear end loose when in first and going slightly uphill coming out of a turn at an intersection. Maybe some of what I wrote was exagerrated. I think of the AT as failsafe for my tires.

That never happened in mine. I mean, it'd shift on its own, but not roughly. Are you a left-foot braker by any chance? I've noticed the following with the 2-1 shift in the AT:

a. let it downshift on its own with foot off gas = perfectly smooth.
b. give it gas when downshifting manually = small bump
c. let it downshift on its own while fiddling with the gas and brake in stop n go traffic = thunk.
d. downshift manually with foot off gas = BANG!

If you're a left-foot braker, you might be getting c. above because the computer is confused about what you want to do. I don't left-foot it, but I think I've had that happen when I've quickly dabbed both the gas and the brake around the point where it auto-shifts (coasting to a stop, thought I saw an opening in traffic, oops gotta slam the brakes, thunk-shift).

Just my theory, might be wrong, might not apply to you.

Re: Auto Tranny Performance

my vid of the sedan 5at at atco demostrates chirpage in 3 gears - i do have mods tho. PS i chirped before tho too. Its a matter of traction why is this hard to believe.
