Give it to me straight...
Re: Give it to me straight...
I loved my GTP, it served me well. I'm not in love with the GTOs styling, but it is fast. R&T says it runs 0-60 5.3s, and a 13.8 1320 (probably actually a little faster). Handling is debatable though. R&T says that they could only get .81g on the skidpad and a 63.4 mph slalom. On the other hand C&D reports .88g on the skidpad and Motortrend reports .80 on the skidpad.
Bottom line is that from the line it'll smoke you stock. On a road course you'll have a pretty good chance of taking it. Unless you have FI it deserves respect.

Re: Give it to me straight...
I loved my old Grand Am for what it was. Even though it wasn't that fast, it had the great American torque and it got moving from a stop even better than my current 6MT (but after that, no contest, obviously)... I don't like the bland looks of the new GTO (but the interior is nice) and lack of options, but must admit it is fast and will smoke our G35s in a straight line. I must also say Pontiac's styling has gone to s*** lately, but I'm curious to see how their G6 GTP coupe (3.9L V-6) will turn out, even though it still won't beat our Infinitis and I wouldn't trade mine for one.

sorry to say the "old" 2004 GTO will smoke a G35 and that is with 350HP, just imagine what the outcome will be when the "new" 2005 GTO with 400HP arrives.
Re: Give it to me straight...
I hate to say this but 95 grand am and great american torque do not belong in the same sentence. they are complete opposites. late 60s, early 70s, late 90s V8s have great american torque. Not mid nineties grand ams! max torque for the 92-98 pontiac V6 is 180ftlbs. just curious how many axles you twisted with this beast?

Good point, Kev...
..the real American GTOs ('64 thru the early '70s) were all V8s (389"- 455".. OK, the 455" was a "cheater"). The most prolific was the 400" motor (350 HP/375 TQ) and that was conservatively rated (even w/o ram-air option). It was capable of mid-13s in stock form (& bias-ply street tires); and with mild mods (headers, lo-restiction air filter & jetting, good tires, etc..) it'd run low 12s consistently. The only things you had to be wary of (on the street) were Chevy rat motors (396/375-425s, 427/425-435s), perfectly tuned Hemis (426/425s) and tweaked 440 wedge 6-packs. The 427/428/429 Fords were usually no problems - but watch out for those big-block Cobras (427 side-oilers, w/2 4s)... Anyone who ran in the 11s was considered fast... anyone in the 10s didn't run that car on the street... <sigh> .. those were wonderful times, .. er, the era, I mean.
Now, anything running in the 14s is "respectable", the 13s are "fast" (and likely modded), the 12s are "very fast" (obviously modded), the 11s are "urban legend fast" (and expensively modded), and the 10s... well reliability and longevity are no longer considerations (and not likley to be routinely street driven). And here's the irony... today we're usually talking about 4 and 6 cylinder engines, typically under 4 liters (about 244") - smaller than the grandaddy of American V8s, the 1955 Chevy 265"...
I think these are going to be good times, as well... Drive Safe!

Like how our car cant compare to the gto now, the gto will not even be looked at or mentioned in the same line as a GTO!! New GTR spec's say that "ferrari owners better beware" , should tell ya something. Martin
