How low can tire wear go...

before it's unsafe. I already have a new set of tires that I've bought...i have 35K on my car...the front tires are fine and the back are balding...just wanted to get as much use out of them as I can....but at what point in time is it going to be unsafe...???

Re: How low can tire wear go...

If you look at the tire, there will be indicator (wearing) strips located between in the area wear the main gaps are (either side of the center strips on the Michelins). They are placed horizontally in this water groove. When the remaining tred reaches this level, it's time to replace! Better to spend a few hundred now on new rubber rather than a few thousand on repairing your car which would be the least that could happen should you lose traction. Most reco that you change all 4 tires at the same time too.
With 35k on the car, it would also be a good time to get an alignment so you don't wear out the new tires prematurely. If you have a coupe, 35K on the Michelins would be pretty damn good!! I think most peeps may only be getting about 20K at the most!

Just keep riding till you hydroplane in the rain and crash.
Then.....you will be sure that you need new tires.

So i guess what I'm asking is are these too low that they're unsafe to be driving at highway speeds up to like 90 or 100...???

Re: How low can tire wear go...

As a tire wears the vulcanization continues [making the compound harder and harder and harder] this factor as much as the loss of directional water channels affects rain friction!

Michelin studied millions of tires [all brands/sizes] and found that failures increase dramatically after 2 years or 20,000 miles of use. Why long life tires and low annual mileage don't work well.

Notice Michelins new Pilot PS2 doesn't have directional channels, seems the engineers finally beat the crap out of the marketing guys. Hopefully starting a revival in non driectional tires..........we have suffered so long!

How is it that a non directional tire outperforms the best most expensive directional in wet slalom, g and road racing?

Ever notice that tires with Rain, Hydro, AQUA, etc in their name are some of the WORST WET performing tires? Especially the directional ones!

Be thankful your tires need replacing at 20,000 miles.

I've already bought the tires...so that's not the issue. It's just a pain in the *** to find the time to go get them swapped out. Just want to know if I can wait a couple weeks to do it when I have time or if I need to swap them out immediately...

Re: How low can tire wear go...

From what I've learned over the years, the limit of usefulness is measured by those wear bars (little nubs in the treads). Once the tread gets that low, you're down to about 3/32" (approx. 2mm).
So you'll have to decide if your tires are ok to use for now. Personally, I wouldn't be going 90 or 100 on tires that are nearing replacement. But that's just me.
