2004 G35 Auto-Manual Mode Question, BRAKE OR DOWNSHIFT?

Okay before everyone bashes me on using the Search tool, I already have and didn't come up with the answer I needed.

I drive in MM about 80% of the time, (to those who are about to say, why don't you get a manual) we'll I drive in a lot of traffic and it feels good to have the best of both worlds.

When you are about to come to a stop in MM, is it best to down shift(4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd) or just step on the brakes? (while in 4th or 3rd).

- IF no downshift, just stepping on the brakes... Are there any risks?

manumatic

I'd say I notice myself down shifting most of the time. I don't think there should be any issues by doing this and I'm sure it's a lot better on the brakes!! I also drive in mamumatic bout 80% of the time to avoid drone with my coupe middy!

Downshifting is coo.. but i figure that through excessive use it will damage the transmission one way or another.. the clutches arent indestructible so i assume they will eventually wear down and replacements arent cheap for our trannys.....

The ecu automatically down shifts for you in ManuMatic mode. Downshifting too often/engine braking is increased wear on your torque converter (which is much more expensive to replace than a clutch).

i rather replace brakes than tranny parts.

i had a jetta in which i used to downshift all the time. the tranny began slipping and was toast by the time i traded it in.

i noticed...
if you brake too hard to a stop in manual mode, itll jerk into 1st.like a clunk sound...
it usually happens in 2nd to 1st to a full stop...but if ur slowly braking, itll downshift itself smoothly...

it also depends on the RPMs you are in..i try to Downshift one down, in a turn, then brake a little so im not braking in the turn..and it wont let me.itll stay in the same gear till you hit a certain RPM/Speed

It does work, but it also has safe-guards against over-revving. The MM mode won't let you skip gears, or downshift if you are above a certain RPM range.

I think the 03-04 coupe can do this. I believe the MM changed in 05 when they could not do this.

I have read around and seems that its a 50/50 in which mode gets better MPG.

What do you think? At what RPM do you shift for normal driving?

Seems that if you try to shift from 1st to 2nd when the rpms are not above 2500 it seems to jerk alittle.

If you want to save gas when in MM mode: Shift at an earlier RPM, usually below 3200 RPM.

If you want to save gas when in Auto mode: simply don't step on it as much. Use light pressure, and gradual acceleration.

The best gas saving method is simply driver discretion.
