A NEW ENGINE
Re: A NEW ENGINE
perhaps it doesnt.. but he's not the first... or third... with the same story. Something is up. Certainly flashpoints go up drastically on our vq35 after 3k on just about any oil.. And Blackstones at or near 6K ODI look bleak (any oil).
I'm leaning toward a valve cover leak or some other seal problem.

Your situation is not that bad (wrt getting Infiniti to cover the engine)... It boils down to your skills as a negotiator/argument maker. Moss-Magnuson is the way to go. Randers is dead on, I don't know what everyone else is talking about here..... If you in fact did an oil change at 4000 miles and you now have 11081, there is nothing to it. These dealerships are like that GreatBenefit insurance company in John Grisham's "The Rainmaker". they will deny a claim hoping that you won't press the matter, but smarten up real fast (or else they will be in much deeper 'you know what') as soon as YOU MAKE THEM BELIEVE as clear as a bell that you mean business. You need to be very, very firm, bordering on confrontational, yet vary your speaking tactic to not appear condesending. It's an art really.... and a great attorney can do it really well.
Bottom line, if the facts are as you state them, and they can be documented, you have got nothing to worry about, provided your execution is dean on.

Re: A NEW ENGINE
I didn't blow my engine but appear to have come damn close to it. I put Mobile 1 in. My service station told me to change it after 7k. At 6k I burned all oil and the engine began to tick and knock. The Service manager at the dealership told me Moblie 1 wasn't recommended and I'd waited to long between oil changes. He also falted me for having a NAPA oil filter as well. The bottom line is no one would expect a new car to burn through almost 5 quarts of mobile 1 in 6,000 miles.
The dealer is monitoring my oil consumption but I have little faith in this process. Infiniti customer service doesn't appear to be returning my calls. My engine may be damaged. I'm very angry about all this.

Re: A NEW ENGINE
How could they not reco Mobil 1. I requested synthetic oil at my 9K mile oil change and they obliged. When I asked what synthetic oil they use, they said Mobil 1. It is even written on the service receipt that Mobil 1 is used. In addition, you can legally put any oil you want in your car and switch back from synthetic to regular, providing the oil meets the manufacturers requirements. Typically this is indicated with certifications on the oil containers SAE...You can check in you manual on which certification Infiniti requires. Most manufactures are the same.
Again, there is no way a car using synthetic or not should burn that much oil! There is no way in hell they can say that 7K was too long between oil changes. It has been proven that one of the benefits of synthetic oil is that it doesn't break down as fast as conventional oil. Would I not change it for 20K, NO, but I plan on changing my synthetic about every 4,500 - 5K miles.
Regarding the oil filter, I am sure there are certain requirements for those as well, but I don't think a NAPA filter would be that bad. They are playing you and don't feel like giving you a new motor! I can't see why b/c the dealer gets paid from Infiniti!
I would have them do a compression test on the motor and have them give you the results. I can't there being too much left on that motor! Also, try a different dealer!

"blitz... I cant believe a 35,000 car doesnt have a warning light that Im low on oil."
I can't believe you bought a $35K car and didn't check the oil. Checking fluids needs to be a regular routine. Keep in mind how much money you have invested. Investing a bit of time once a week is good insurance on protecting your investment.
"I sure did. Infiniti said I didnt change my oil, so the warranty does not kick in. That sucks for me! I should get it totalled and get a new car.. soo how much is the new engine?"
I hope you are not suggesting you will be committing insurance fraud. I don't pay my premiums so other policy holders can make money. Fraud is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. You can probably find several threads on any car forum where people complain about their rates. Fraud is one factor in the cost of insurance. It is not a victimless crime. All of us pay more as a result.
Sorry if this got a bit off topic, but it needed to be said.

Re: A NEW ENGINE
murray, why didn't you change your oil? Car maintenance is far from rocket science and Infiniti gives you a whole service manual with a schedule that is very easy to follow.
Don't mess around with dealerships and their petty excuses. Call up Infiniti Consumer Affairs and let them know the deal. Unless the car drank all the oil in those 7K miles or so that you did not change your oil (which is HIGHLY unusual), there is NO way that this is your fault and the engine HAS to be repaired or replaced under warranty.
I think that car dealerships should explain the required maintenance when somebody is taking delivery of the car.

Re: A NEW ENGINE
Make no assumptions..
Real miles on real oil and real filters....

It looks that extended drains arent really possible on the VQ35. You cant totally blame filtration. The 7500 schedule 2 mx may be too optimistic/dangerous.
You know Q45tech mentioned this on Fresh alloy a few weeks ago.
<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr>
* Nissan first attempt at full floating cylinder liners with very light pressure oil rings. [to reduce friction thereby increasing flywheel horsepower by 9]. Some what Risky and Difficult to get right on the first or 2nd try.
<hr></blockquote>
and then there's that pic that Danny @ Grubbs posted a few weeks ago. I'm assuming that was a no fault engine failure from the way he spoke of it.
I'm not really worried yet.. but I was expecting a 200K Nissan VQ (like VQs past). I hope thats still the case.

Re: A NEW ENGINE
Does anyone know what the dealers take as proof that you changed your oil? I do my own, when the Navi tells me to, which I have set for 5000 using Mobil 1. I write the change in my Maintenance Manual, but other than a credit card receipt for oil and a filter, and my notation in a log, that's all I've got.
Re: A NEW ENGINE
I agree that this really doesn't pass the smell test. A dealership wouldn't argue this one if the oil weren't changed for a couple extra 1000 miles. What EXACTLY is the engine damage?
I'm also curious as to what you were thinking by not spending $25 on an oil change for a $36,000 car?
