I raced a M3 convertible...

and won!!!
Heres the story me and my brother were coming from the infiniti dealer to purchase some touch-up paint and then headed back home. On the way, there was a M3 convertible behind me that passed me. So I decided to play follow the leader and when I got chance pulled up next to him at about 40mph and we went at it. I was ahead till about 75mph and the M3 needed to get over because there was a slow car in front of him. He thought he was going to cut me off with his $60k german car. But couldn't catch up and ended up behind me. Yeah I kicked his ***!!!

I dont think you would have won if there wasnt any traffic to slow him down

When we raced the traffic was clear and he was trying to cut me off.
Also he had a convertible which is considerbly slower than the M3 coupe and I think he also had the SMG transmission. I didn't beat him by alot, he was by my rear bumper.

Even though the convertible is much heavier, & even w/ SMG, the M3 vert is still supposed to be faster. Considering you also had your bro w/ you, I'd say it was more due to your driving skills, or his lack thereof. Congrats!

Re: I raced a M3 convertible...

that M3 was probaly not even racing you. Like u said, the M3 was behind a slow car. SMG technically shifts faster than Manual unless ur an extremely good manual driver. Besides, ur car is automatic that runs 0-60 in 6.1 secs . A convertible M3 runs at 5.5.

Good kill! Its totally believable since m3 convertibles are way heavier than the m3 coupes.

I read a C&D comparo that got an M3 convertible at 5.0
0 to 60. Also, my dad has an 02 M3 convertible, and it is way faster than my 6mt. Just my .02. Once you get above 6000 rpm in the m3, forget about it.

Unless it was SMG, there is still no technique to an SMG transmission, you flick the paddles up and down!! But the 6speed got rated from BMW at 5.3-5.4 and SMG is slower than a 6speed in the coupe by alot, so i would think a convertible SMG is like ummm, double slow HAHA!!

Re: I raced a M3 convertible...

Anyway it's beleivable if he had the top down and maybe your Z-tube gave you a little more umph that you needed and your reaction time was a little better. As some have stated, anything can happen on the streets. I agree that the M3 is supposed to be faster, but then again a 330 CI is supposed to be comparable and I remember crushing one by a couple of carlengths to @ 70 MPH. Everyone loves to "mag-race" way too much "ur car does 0-60 blah blah blah". Those numbers are vastly inconsistent from mag to mag and from car to car. While you can come up with a relative comparison using those numbers as regards how fast a car feels, it is not the "be all tell all" on the streets. Certain cars perform at different levels under different conditions. I knew a guy who would race my MX6 in his modded RX7 (non turbo 2nd gen) when it was hot and he would pull on me by @ 1/2 car each time. When it was cold we were neck and neck each time. The mags post the best numbers that they were able to obtain using multiple techniques on multiple runs (normally before the break-in when the car is slower anyway) Not even the professionals can obtain the best numbers on each run. I digress.. But I'm not saying that the M3 was supposed to lose only that winning is not absolute or guaranteed with every run..

BTW are you sure that is was not a 330CI convert. Some people confuse them with the M
