I had the same funky smell on my 2007 6MT. It turned out to be a busted output shaft seal, which leaked onto the exhaust and burned. But that's not all. Attached is a photo of what was happening. It would leak on the exhaust then the fluid would run to the right and left and embed into the metal weave mesh on the exhaust. The fluid would get trapped and burn well after the problem was fixed. I had the smell for 2+ weeks after I got the seal fixed and the dealership was confused why I still had the smell. So I got under the car and doused the metal weave mesh with simple green and then turned the car on and then sprayed the mesh with water and allowed the steam from the water/simple green mix to basically steam clean the exhaust mesh. The smell is gone.
