My father uses a V1 and those are pretty nice. I like how it tells you which direction the radar signal is coming from, they are the only brand that does that.

Really every brand makes some good detectors. Just don't buy a cheap one, they are usually worthless and you'll end up spending more if you got a ticket than if you paid for a top-end radar detector in the first place.

Yea, i give props to my 9500i. Its saved me a ton of times. Definitely well worth the $300 investment because its paid for itself already. It has the gps feature which lets you tune out pesky garage frequency's whenever you pass by it so it won't go off (real handy). But I have one question for you guys, you say some cops use Laser and thats virtually undetectable? My radar has a laser 'picker-upper' and it alerts me whenever a radar is picked up which is very rare. Is this the wrong type of laser that its picking up?

Radar bounces all over the place and reflects off many surfaces. A good radar detector like the V1 picks up these signals from afar and tells you where they are originating from with the arrows. It will pick up laser too but laser is a precise beam of light. Once it's picked it up, you've already been tagged. You still have to opportunity to slow down and hope the cop is lenient though. Valentine One's website does a very good job of explaining everything.

I realize I was speeding, breaking the law, and got caught, but I'm a safe/good driver and don't speed over 10/15 rarely ever or in high volume traffic areas. I'm tired of bleeding money to probate courts and now we've got this 'super duper speeder' law in Georgia that tacks on an extra $200 for anything 15 over...I DO NOT want my insurance to go up, it's enough already on the G

So it's time to buy a radar detector. I'm not looking to spend a ton so I'm thinking about getting the Escort 8500 X50. What do you guys think about a refurbished radar detector..? Bad idea?

Also, does anyone else who lives in Atlanta know if our police force is using laser detectors? If so it might be worthless to buy this..

I picked one up off of an auction from the Best Buy outlet store. I ended up getting it for about $150 after everything.

I've been using it for over a week, but so far it hasn't actually alerted me of any cops, just a few falses. I guess I haven't been targeted yet...
Well today my 8500 X50 saved my *** for the first time. I was in a 30 mph zone going about 45mph. The detector picked up the Ka band about 1/4 mile before I could even visually see the two cops on the side of the road. It was pretty sweet! 5 minutes later I got another Ka on the highway, it was from an under cover coming the at me from the opposite direction. He had his cherries on and was in the process of pulling the guy over.

Looks like my X50 has already paid for itself!

But as far as refurbished........they only down side imo is that it could be scratched in places. If that does not bother you than go for it. Factory refurbished product is just as good or better than new in most cases.

+1

v1

I live outside of Metro Atlanta on the east side. My two tickets were actually over near Athens, GA and both were marked as radar not laser on the tickets. One was an Athens Clarke county officer and the other Georgia State Patrol.

Thanks a lot for the distinction, I didn't notice. I'll probably go with the 9500i if I go Passport and Refurb sounds like a good way to go.

I don't drive like a Jack Azz or think that buying a detector will give me that right. I realize these things don't give you a 'speeding ticket shield', just knowing that I tend to drive 5-10+ over sometimes a little extra protection/warning would be great

but ever thought about slowing down a bit? if you only go 5~10mph over, the chance of you getting pulled over probably drops by like 80%.. (i made up the % btw)
I usually only drive 5-10 over, sometimes I can develop a lead foot and like you guys know it doesn't take a lot in a G to get to 15 over, especially when you want to hear that sexy sound

I'm curious, what made you ditch the Passport 9500i and go with V1?

You might try doing the speed limit and taking your need for speed to the track. Both safer and cheaper (no tickets) for you and those around you!

first of all i really wanted the V1. plus when you have a ability to see where the boggies are, no radar can beat that.. and let me tell you.. its detection range is AMAZING.. it does not fail if it says its KA be aware that theres a cop. also its been several years that i have the v1 and it stills prefors like out of the box, unlike the escort(which i changed 3 different times(to a different model)) felt like cheap.

my 9500i works really good at night, it detected like 3 miles away on the highway at night. but day time it sucks *****, i think cop use laser on the day light and use radar at night. and i might be wrong.

in ohio i guess radar detectors are pretty much useless now that the police can simply "estimate" how quickly you were going and it will hold up in court...

I like how everyone is telling him to slow down but in most situations that people get pulled over its in situations where there is no danger in going a lil faster.. aka no traffic or in the middle of the night. If im on a 35 in the middle of nowhere at 3 in the mornin i dont see a problem with going more than 10 over.. sorry i must be endangering lives

Why is it that when people start a thread asking what radar detector to get others reply with "don't speed". I am pretty sure OP understands if you don't speed and you won't get a speeding ticket. It's like telling them, well if you take the bus you won't get a speeding ticket.

Anyway, if you are looking for a solid radar detector you won't be let down by either the V1 or the 9500ix. Both have different features and work very well. I have the 9500ix and it works great. I drive through georgia a few times a year and have found a lot of lasers being used. the 9500ix will pick it up but the warning isn't great. If lasers are popular in your area I would suggest getting a laser shifter either alone or to supplement a radar detector. Good luck and happy speeding lol
