Met Mr. Rev Limiter Today

Read about it, heard about it.....now I experienced it. Interesting though it happened in first gear....wound out from a light, nothing near full throttle and just before I was heading for second gear the engine cut out....just for a millisecond, kind of a dead feeling, no bang, no lurch....just a hicupp. When second engaged she came right back. All I can say is that first gear is so quick we have to be on the ball and get second as quick as we can.

Mr. Rev Limiter is not a very welcome guest when you are trying to accerate hard. Just gotta watch that tach before it hits 6700 and it feels even worse when you have the VDC on after you shift. The throttle lags!

Have fun!

Re: Met Mr. Rev Limiter Today

Does anyone else think maybe our gears are a little too short, by chance? Or is it just me?

Re: Met Mr. Rev Limiter Today

Our gears are definitely not short. I don't think that many cars can hit 62 in 2nd.

Ok, I have a question. Assuming that your car is past the break-in period and has been properly broken in, is it bad in any way for your engine to hit the rev limiter, assuming you don't drive the car above 6500 for a long time haha?

Re: Met Mr. Rev Limiter Today

The purpose of the rev limiter is to protect the engine from damage, so hitting it shouldn't hurt unless you really do it for an extended period of time.

The Vector Aeromotive W-8 Twin Turbo can go 68mph in 1st.

Hitting the rev limiter doesn't hurt the engine. Going about 500-1000 rpms past that point would if you didn't have the limiter. I wouldn't make it a habit, though.

Re: Met Mr. Rev Limiter Today

Actually you can get past the rev limiter. I've heard stories of people screwing up shifting when they're trying to (drag) race and going from say 3rd to 2nd instead of 3rd to 4th (on a 6spd). If that happens, you will get past the rev limiter, because there's nothing that the rev limiter can do to stop the kinetic energy of the moving parts in the engine. It can only stop you from passing a point on the way up.

Yes, that's true on a manual. On the automatics, the computer will refuse to downshift until it's safe.
