Tiptronic

Hey guys.

recently i've gotten in the mood to drive my 04 g in tip...its actually somewhat fun..hahaha

i want to know if im doing it right tho.

when im crusing i usually change it every 10mph...it shifts really clean

now when im downshifting to stop...i use the 10mph method in reverse...but it doesn't feel clean...i feel like im being pulled back..my foot is slighty on the break while im downshifting...am i doing something wrong here?

You can try and give it a little gas before you downshift, but i think they all feel like that until you get into some more advanced tiptronic systems

Wait so you aren't even racing and you are asking when to shift on an AT? Either let the car decide when to shift itself or just do it at a point where you decide the fun vs extra gas factor is a good balance for you.

You can downshift from 5th to 4th to 3rd but I wouldn't shift into any lower gears cause it's too hard on your trans. Coming to a stop the trans will shift into 2nd and 1st by it's self....fun stuff.

I actually managed to rev match downshift my tiptronic volvo S40... I wouldn't advise it though- it had to be timed perfectly and I don't know what kind of wear that puts on the trans.

Just get a manual.

Just let the car downshift by itself. You only need to decide when to shift up. The car will do a better job of downshifting.

Depends when you shift, usually automatics are designed to max fuel economy so unless you are shifting before 3000 rpm it is less fuel efficient. And to solve your problem downshifting don't downshift from 4 to 3rd until like 30mph. From second to first, do around 15mph.

I usually downshift from 5th to 4th around 55mph, 4th to 3rd around 30-35mph. I never downshift lower than 3rd.

Edit: Nevermind, I actually do downshift to 2nd sometimes, but like at 20mph, so I'm still in my torque band.

So shifting from 3rd to 2nd is really bad on the trans? Even if the rpm is in the 4500ish area after the shift? I've done this a couple times when driving uphill to pass cars... now I'm worried!

You can purchase one of my grounding kits to improve the shifting response. PM me if you are interested.
