Considering purchase, but worried about oil consumption problems

Hi folks,

I had decided I was going to start shopping for an 05 or 06 MT Coupe in a couple of weeks once some money came in, and came on these forums to do some reading.

I read about the problems people are having with the 05's and 06's revup engines' oil consumption, and new engines still not fixing it, and now I'm worried.

I realize I'm speaking to a community of fans of the vehicle (I am one myself), but I'm hoping for some objective discussion...really, in the end, I'm hoping someone can make me comfortable enough with this that I can go ahead with my plan to buy one of these cars.

Thanks

Just make sure you buy one that is still under warranty and has a good record of maintenance history.

EDIT: An un-modded one would be ideal too so it would be harder for a stealership to give you BS regarding the warranty.

I was in this position when my previous G got totaled last year and I was on the fence about whether or not to buy another one. A lot of these cars are dropping out of powertrain warranty or are already out, and as you said a lot of the replacement engines have the same problem because they've done nothing to actually remedy the problem causing OC. Nissan is basically waiting it out at this point until they can say "your warranty expired already, don't let the door hit you on the way out".

So as far as potential purchases go, it's buyer beware as far as I'm concerned. I love these cars and I was willing to take the risk, so I bought another G35. Some people may not be as willing. And whether you have an OC engine or not is really luck of the draw, there is no pattern whatsoever regarding mileage, presence of mods, driving style, etc. so it really is a leap of faith on the buyers part.

Welcome to Driver....=oP

There are two ways to make sure you won't have to buy a new engine, like all the member mentioned....warranty. And buying an 5AT, we don't have engine or clutch issues. Those are your two (2) issues....

hey guys, I am a new g35 owner and I am a major impulse buyer.. so I bought it without doing any research. Now that I come on here I see the OC issue and I am just curious if it affects 03 models as well. I bought an 03 AT. Is this something I need to keep an eye on? Or is there any regular issues that I should expect. My car has 71k miles on it so far. Thanks!

^I don't think the non rev-up engines (03 AT) were really effected.

Majority of OC affects 05-07 6MT's with the rev-up engine. However there have been isolated cases of 03-05 5AT's getting it as well, including one local guy here who got shafted by Nissan and hung out to dry after it started happening.

Hey, why don't you buy my coupe? I'm also in Vancouver. My car is an '05 with 45,000km's (Canadian vehicle), no accidents, and an extended warranty until 2012. My car has passed the oil consumption test (therefore it does not consume any more oil than normal). It also has 06 projectors, toyo proxes tires. It is a 6MT model, with everything but navigation

Yes, it's very isolated to the point where I really wouldn't worry about it. Just change your oil on time and don't redline it at every stoplight and you should be good.

Ok... I'll only redline 50% of the stoplights... Appreciate the info!
