Service engine soon

I know this a common topic, the service engine soon light has been on before but we cleared it by doing the pedal/ignition deal. today it came back up so i put my code reader on, it scanned it and came up with nothing... then why would the light come on?

Forget that, i was scanning it wrong :S it gave me P1283, now i have my cats removed with straight test pipe, will this be causing the code? (don't worry, its actually legal to not have cats where i am) if it is causing the code like i said i have gotten rid of it and it stays away for a while.. so my question is should i just clear it when it is thrown or is it necessary to get it delt with?
