07 G35 RPM drops while driving... engine dies
Hopeing you guys/gals can help me out with this as I am not a car guy in this is the first time I've bought a "decent" car from a dealership.
The car was purchased 1 month ago from a dealership with 55,000 km.
Two weeks ago I was driving along at 50km.hr when all of a sudden the engine wouldn't rev above 1000RPM. Interestingly when in neutral it would rev all the way up, but was limited to 10000 in gear and thus the car wouldn't go over 20km/hr. After playing around with it in a parking lot for a while the engine started to struggle and eventually would not start. Constant clicking when I turned the key.
It was towed to the dealership and the next day the called me to tell me that it started no problem. Ran a diagnostic on the car which told them to replace the battery, which they did.
I reluctantly took the car back and a week later the exact same thing happened. This time I let it sit for 15 mins, then was able to start it again and drive it home. A few hours later I tried a test drive and only got a few hundread yards down the road before the rpm dropped and eventually the car died completely. Dashboard lights began flashing randomly. Ended up pushing the car home. While I had it towed the next day, I was able to start it up and drive it fully to position the car for the tow truck.
This time the dealership says the alternator needs to be replaced but nothing else.
Has anybody heard of this issue happening before?

not sure if G35s have this or whatever (i'm a new G35 owner).. but my VW used to do that.. turns out the coilpack had cracked and when i drove it around for awhile (heated up)... the coilpack would bend or whatever a little because of the crack and the car would sputter when at stop lights/stopping.. and sometimes would die on me and the RPMs wouldn't go high. But after letting my car sit still and cool down.. I could drive it again easily like it had no problems. It only happened when I was at a stop and going from stop to go.. when driving normally on the highway it would never sputter or die. only stopping then going
sounds like a cam sensor problem, sometimes they dont trip service engine soon light but they get oil in the terminals and will cause vehicle to shut off while driving, intermitent hard starts and lack of power. very common on the vq35 engines
Sounds like a charging system problem to me. Since they replaced the battery, I would assume it is the alternator. The battery may need to be replaced again as well since you have been driving around with a bad alternator. An easy way to test it (but not admittedly not a comprehensive test) is to check voltage at the alterntor while the car is running. If it is much below 14.0-14.5 volts or is fluctuating wildly, the alternator is bad.
The alternator is being replaced tomorrow and I will push them for a new battery. It is encouraging that that could be the issue.
I believe it is covered under the full warranty and the full extended warranty that I purchased when I bought the car.
Since this all happened two weeks after purchase I'm not too worried about them trying to ding me for service charges. I just want this issue resolved so I can drive my car without fear of an unnecessary breakdown.
I came here because I was far from impressed with the attention to the problem that the dealership gave the car.
Not sure what you mean by certified pre owned but it was leased from that dealership and serviced at the dealership.
Thanks for the input so far and any further input.

Did you ever find a fix
I am currently going through the same issue. My car wont rev past 1500 rpm in gear but will rev perfectly fine in neutral. And Id definitely like to get her fully operational.

Hook up an OBD2 scanner and find out why you're in limp mode, my guess is transmission failure for the input turbine speed sensor but the computer should tell you. If not then Nissan can tell you for a diagnostic fee.
