squealing under hood

I've been noticing some squealing from under the hood when starting my 04 G35 from time to time. It will last for about 5-10 seconds then stop. I've been told the a/c belt should be replaced (has cracks) and I'm wondering if this would fix the problem? Also, should the serpentine belt be replaced at the same time?

thanks

I would change all the belts at the same time.

could both belts be causing the squealing, or just one?

Yes both belts could be squealing. I got all of my belts change at 30k miles. Cost between 130-200

+1 for changing all belts, its a good idea since your already in there and wrenching. But it would be ANY belt or combination of more than one thats making noises

Yeah change all the belts and make sure that the tensioner is ok. some timesit will loosen over time, based on my experience!

+1 change all the belts at the same time... Especially if they are squealing and/or cracked.

Save the money and do it yourself if you have the basic tools (jack, 2 jack stands, 12 mm and 14 mm sockets, a short and a long socket extension). Both belts should cost around $45. Very easy to do.

Here is the DIY:

I had to tighten the belt tensioner down last night because it was starting to squeal at cold start. I guess I didn't tighten it down enough when I changed it.

You don't need a jack and/or jack stands to do belts. All you need is a few sockets and a ratchet.... but yeah, definitely do it yourself. It's a ridiculously easy job even for an inexperienced shade-tree mechanic.

^^This.

And partyman a lot of us are too low to get to the tensioner bolt w/o jacking up the car, so yes, I need a jack and stands.

I've tightened both belts with just the hood popped. You can reach the tensioner bolts if you know what your feeling for from above.

You must have really long and skinny arm. I don't see how anyone can get their arm all the way down there.
