Question 2004 G35 Engine problem - need advice

Hi everyone!

Can you guys see if you can help me here please.

I was driving home today and in the middle of my freeway drive my car suddenly slightly decelerated (from 65 mph to like 55 mph) and my engine light came on. 3 seconds later, everything was back to normal - no engine light and car was driving normal.

I got home, parked, turned car off and immediately tried to restart it. No luck!!!

The engine cranks, but it wont start. Tried 4 times in the last 2 hours.

Tried different key, made sure the gas cap is tightened. Thats as much as i can guess could be wrong.

Changed battery like 6 months ago when i bought the car.

Thanks for any thoughts

Sounds like you might need to replace your throttle.

Check ALL wiring. Not an easy task.

Sounds/feels like a sensor died, you could swap parts forever and not find it without the right equipment. Have it towed to Nissan or a qualified mechanic if you have one....Gary

Gary - you were right.

I brought it to a local mechanic - the diagnostic showed crankshaft sensor (the one below the car).

I left the place and came back in 2 hours. They were in the middle of replacing the camshaft sensors...ohh.

I told them, the diagnostic did not show those but the one below the car. They said they have to look on a map where is that one.

I told them, below the driver side tire once u lift the car. They did that and replaced the crankshaft sensor. Then they put back the camshaft sensors that they have already taken out.

I am thinking im all set right?..No. They start the car. Hard start. 5 secs of engine cranking with the dashboard lit up (service, slip and VC smthin).Diagnostics now show camshaft sensors issues - both of them.

I leave mad and take it to another "recommended Infiniti local shop". He tells me i need "camshaft sprocket" and i get quoted 1400. WOW

Guys..what is a camshaft sprocked - never seen it mentioned here, barely on google and no mention on the owner manual.

Any ideas on that.

Thanks a lot

Gary - please advice - do i take it out of that second shop and bring it to the dealer?

Seriously, at this point i would rather follow the online recommendation of a premier member here, rather than what any mechanic tells me.

Thanks for anything anyone can contribute here
Nick

Gary - i just saw you are from valencia - im from West LA and my car is currently at a store in the valley.

6 months in and this happens. Hopefully you got a good deal and this fix brings the price back to what you should have paid for a good car

well - id like to think i got a good deal SoulGlo- 10k plus 2k for warranty.

So here - the saga continues..

I got my car out of the second shop. I was told i can drive (it still has a hard start).

the second shop is calling the warranty company to see if the problem would be covered.

But i got more detail on the problem - the guy had a big scanner with a Nissan logo on top - i dunno if that qualifies as "the right equipment". Anyways, the problem is i believe connected to ignition and it also has something to do with a spracket, sparkler, sparel and camshaft or something.

The angles were supposed to be both at around 2 degrees, however the scanner showed that one of the angles is at 63 degrees the other at 2 degrees - thats why the hard start teh mechanic says.

The cause could have been lack of oil changes i was told. Since i bought the car, in 10 k miles i have already put premium oil twice - first time immediately after i bought it.

The interesting part is that the guy also told me that the problem might fix itself once i do several oil changes. I know - confusing right?..i mean do i need this expensive repair now or do i just change the oil to fix the hard start?

As always, any thought or comments are appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

What you're doing doesn't sound or feel right, just drive your car making sure all your fluid levels are correct. If you continue to have issues take your car to CARZONE on Sepulveda in Van Nuys 818-373-1330 these guys are Nissan trained mechanics and do great work....Gary

ok - for those interested - i got my car back from the dealer (miller infinity - van nuys) and everything appears fine now.

total bill at the dealership - $620 (2 camshaft sensors and camshaft wiring). they also gave me free car from sat afternoon till pick up (monday noon)

lesson learned for me- if car dont start - bring to dealership for proper diagnostic. i tried 2 small car shops before dealer, waisted $400. im pretty sure the first local shop messed up my cam sensors on the first place.

the second local shop wanted to take my engine apart and fix some "sprakets". Thank god i left that place too

thanks for all replies

Lesson for future folks the most common issue with G35 is typically camshaft and crankshaft position sensors going bad and causing issues with starting the vehicle. You will see the signs of that in the codes, VDC/SLIP lights along with starting issues.

This happened to me today... Scared the living sh*t out of me when the car decelerated like no other and then stalled. I literally rolled a quarter of a mile into an empty parking lot and angling like no other, praying that my car doesn't roll back down. I really hope I get it resolved tomorrow =[
