i had the bubbling on the dot matrix when i got mine done. it can be avoided but after a while you just dont fuss over these little things. it really isnt that noticeable, and it gets much better over time, especially in the first few weeks. I have seen some people who have had a black sheet of vinyl cover up the dot matrix, but this in turn limits rearview visibility from the driver's seat.
I believe if you do tint it yourself, you can go over the bumps. But you should go over it again in about 2 weeks to get the bubbles out... Tint Adhesive quality might be a factor in it too...
All the times i've had my car tinted, they went over the bumps then went over it again in two weeks to make it perfect.

The reason the dot matrix on rear glass do not allow tint to fully stick is because of two reasons:
1. ceramic dots are water based
2. ceramic dots are laid over the glass.
Imagine a large piece of particle (sand) on the glass and the tint goes over it.....there will be an air pocket created bc of it, which would look slightly silverish. To combat this problem, tinters use various methods to get the tint to lay flat; however, there will always be some degree of silverish lining around the ceramics..........how visible it would be depends on two things:
1. technique used in adhering the film
2. shade of tint - the darker you go the contrast becomes greater.
Talk to your tint guy about how they deal with this and shoot me a pm and I'll do what I can to help you assess.

the person that did my tinting just went over it useing a full peice of film for the back window. He just told me to keep going over it to just keep it on there and so far it has held up very nicely. Havent had any problems whatsoever and I have had them tinted for about 8 or 9 months now.
I had my 05 6MT tinted yesterday. The shop's recommended solution is to paint (not sure what kind of paint they use) the dot matrix portion of the rear window. The shop seemed reputable and knowledgeable, and they said it was the best solution they had come up with in their 10 years of experiences.
Appparently they mask off the dot matrix area, and they use some sort of spray-on paint material. The owner of the shop showed me two cars that they had done, and it did look very clean and very OEM-like.
Does anyone else have experience with this?

Yes, I got mine done at a very reputable place and he said he would never tint over a dot matrix. He did a real clean job by taping off the interior and then painting it. I would think most places wouldnt want to tint over there because of the result of bubbles butI'm really glad I got the paint done because there's no bubbles and nothing to worry about.

The tint person I'm dealing with said he "sands" the dots down. If he goes down too far, he could damage the glass... Has anyone else had this sanding technique done to the dots before tint installation? Results? I'm still trying to decide...
