Weird musty smell after 5 days parking?

Any ideas? I parked my car at the airport for 5 days (outside) and when I returned, the car smelled really musty and almost mildew smell? I checked the car thoroughly for wetness, as I know it rained alot while I was away, but there was not wet carpet in the cabin or trunk? I sprayed Febreez in the car and opened the sunroof to help it air out, but I park my BMW at the airport ALL the time and never had the problem? Thanks

Did you have wet feet when you drove to the airport? Its always possible water soaked through the carpet and its a little moldy on the underside, even after the water dried.

Nope, got in the car in my garage and out at the airport. It was not wet the day I left?

I know the common areas that leak on these cars (vapor barrier in door, window weather seal and trunk) and I swear there is no leak? I checked the car well and no wet areas anywhere in the cabin or trunk? WEIRD?

turn on your Air Conditioner, with the temp turned up to 70 degrees or more

Drive for 15 minutes, it will be gone...

Likely you had the defroster on heading to the airport, so A/C was ingaged, and it built upsome humidity that it wasn't able to get rid of prior to parking

I had something similar......traced it back to the a/c. I thought it might actually be the moist air that creeps into the in cabin filter area through the battery compartment area(if you take of the battery cover and not just the door and taken out the battery...you will understand). If thats the case the "heated air mod fix" might fix the problem.

Yeah, i think there was a big long thread that was posted here before entitled "Smelly G" - I think that should have some helpful information. Possibly try the search and find it.

Quick search revealed these threads that may pertain. BTW I did a search on "Smelly" - I think this should answer your question. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help! This is the first time my car has been parked outside for longer than 8 hours or so, she is truly spoiled!

Yeah... My A/C has that smell after I wash... I don't think it's anything to worry about... not unless it doesn't go away...then I think the cabin A/C filter need to be changed...

It has something to do with the filter also. I used to get that musty smell when you first turn on th a/c when there was moisture outside....either rain or fog. I changed my in-cabin filter about a month ago and that smell is gone. It has also been raining like crazy so the conditions are the same. My idea is that moisture is creaping in through the battery compartment area and it gets your in-cabin filter moist and thats where the must is coming from. In the battery compartment there are some serious gaps in the body which looks like infiniti rushed to put in. I was surprised because these gaps look like some kid works on his civic intake with a $50 budget and duct tape!
