Burned Clutch Club

Hey gang......The Growler's growling this morning! Having driven my 6mt for around three months now I joined the burned clutch club. From what I can tell, not too many forum members are in the club as of yet. I got distracted this morning and started out in 5th..ouch, the G moved out quickly and I shifted about 4 seconds later, but it was enough to have that rotten smell follow me for about three or four minutes...I don't know what the tach read. I know Rambo was talking about this a while back. The burn was probably not too severe but....I would love to hear the opinions of our clutch experts. I'm aware or how this can happen now...it will not happen again.

Thanks Growler

Re: Burned Clutch Club

Try putting the car in neutral when ever you are stopped, either at a light or when ever. I have never done what you describe but it may help to remind you to put it on first everytime. I have been driving stick for years and have burned my clutch once or twice. Usually from too much gas at a launch combined with too slow of a clutch release. Everyone who drives stick has probably done it some time. Just remember that problems usually arise if you do it too frequently. Remember to have fun though because that's what the 6MT does best! Thanks Jason..........your absolutely right. Stay in neutral, at least you can give your clutch foot and leg a rest while waiting for a light change.

Re: Burned Clutch Club

yikes a 5th gear launch from a stop you woudl have to be at like 6 grand to get the car moving. o well... silly mistakes dont worry im sure its fine

im considering teaching my girlfriend to drive my car. she doesnt know how to drive standard but im afraid that she will do something along this line. I havent spelt a burt clutch in my g before but im afraid i will if i teach her.

is the smell so profound that you know exactly what happened? or is it just a curious smell that is hard to identify?

Clutch burn is about the worst smell you can get out of a car. It's not nice at all. I have never burned my G but I have done it once or twice in other cars. Provided it is not a regular thing it doesn't harm the clutch too much.

I have a friend whose house is on a hill in San Francisco, and parallel parking on his street is a PITA. I burned my clutch trying to go in reverse. You remember that sulphur smell that the G gave off when our cars were new? It's pretty similar to that smell.

Yes....the smell of a burned clutch is something you will never forget..it is absolutely rotton!!! a MIXTURE OF FISH AND EGGS! burned in a dry frying pan............EVERYTHING SEEMED OK LATER IN THE DAY, SO IT WAS A QUICK EVENT. Thanks everyone for getting back to me....we have to watch out for this with our 6mt......that engine of ours revs up so damn quick.

If your GF has never driven a manual tranny car before. I would worry about more than a burnt clutch on your "G".
The best cars to teach someone to drive a manual is a Honda. Smoooooth.

Re: Burned Clutch Club

Yeah LOL do not start the car in 5th gear!
and when you come to a stop i recommend staying in neutral heh
Im sure your clutch is fine, but you'd probably have to get it replaced in about 15,000 miles or so
im not sure how much the clutch contact costs, but im sure overall its less than a $500 job including labor
Its considered as normal wear, such as with a break-pad, so its nothing too serious to worry about, just have fun and replace it every 30K miles

Re: Burned Clutch Club

Oh man, every 30k miles that would get a little pricey no? I plan to keep my clutch for the life of the car or at least 100k miles. I guess we'll see how It drives though that is a big factor, and then also How much fun I want to have with it!

Re: Burned Clutch Club

30K isnt that bad heh, the more you race, the more clutch you burn, consider it as a 5th brake pad!
