2004 G35 coupe with automatic transmission. I took the negative cable off the battery for approximately an hour and then put it back on. Now when I try to manually shift the gears by sliding the stick over to the right it stays in drive. I don't know why it wouldn't let me manually run through the gears as it had before me taking the negative cable off. If anybody has a clue please educate me

Try removing the battery cables (both of them, negative first off and LAST on), when the cables are both off hold the brake pedal down for 5 seconds, then put the cables back on, positive first, ground last.

Thanks for responding but I'm unsure about two things.
What is the order taking off the cables?
What is the order when putting them back on?

I corrected the manual shift issue. Fellow on YouTube demonstrated that by turning the key to on position, open door, turn to off position, close door, repeat X's 2 it will make manual shifting possible again.
Worked straight away.

Awesome, as for the cable order, the NEGATIVE cable is always the first one you disconnect and the last one you reconnect.

First off, last on.

Reason for this is it limits your arc flash potential for the positive cable if there is no circuit for it to complete, without the negative cable attached you can't accidentally arc from the positive to the chassis.

The reason he was confused is you have a typo (brain cramp) in your post #2. In your parenthetical description of order, you have it "first off, first on." You might want to edit that post!
