Anyone Know??? man vs. auto 0-60 and 1/4m times?

Hi All!
I'm a new member (though have been reading forums for a couple months now) and deciding on a new G35 coupe.... Should I go with Manual 6MT or Autostick???

I live in LA and a stick sucks here but I don't want to lose performance with the auto. DOES ANYONE KNOW 0-60mph and 1/4 mile times for 6MT vs. AUTO??

I really haven't seen any numbers at all on the auto as all car mag tests on done on the manuals. I really want to know how much time am I giving up if I go with the slushbox? Thanks in advance for your guy's help!

Oh...and I should say that I will be heavily modifying the G35C once I get it - on tune of $30K -$40K including ICE, turbos, exhaust, etc.. so will I also be screwed if I go with the auto (due to the tranny not be able to handle the mods?)???

Sounds to me like you should look for a 6MT, but the autos are about .2 sec slower to 60. I'm not sure what the quarter miles times are.

Go with the 6MT. Especially if you want to mod it. Slushboxes can only get a certain amount of performance before the tranny needs to be modded. Your mod's would be most effective with a manual. A 6MT isn't that bad in traffic either. I drive straight into LA every day from Long Beach. Some days I wish I had the auto, (So does my girl), but when the weekend rolls around and I'm roaring down PCH at 5000 RPM I couldn't feel better! Peace

The manual will handle more torque, and be a little quicker. However, our auto is supposedly the same tranny as the Q45, which has a 340hp V8, so it can probably take moderate mods without a problem.

On the other hand, LA traffic is a very big argument for going with an auto.

deejay: I was faced with the same dilemma. All six sports cars, including a Porsche 928, since 1969 were stick shifts. But driving through LA on the way to Orange County was a real left leg buster. The dealer had the color I wanted, in stock, but it was a 6AT. What helped me was a comment from my son who said, "dad, you'll get used to it." And I have. And not regretted the decision. The auto has plenty of guts, and if you live in an area where there is constant stop and go traffic, the stick gets old in a hurry. If you are going for lots of mods, save your $2K on the factory Nav system and get a Garmin StreetPilot III if you really want a navagation system.

When did they start making a 6-speed auto?

Re: Anyone Know??? man vs. auto 0-60 and 1/4m tim

I always wonder why people even ask this question. I always thought there were 2 camps: 1) Manual-Until-I-Die (like me); and 2) Automatic because its easy or theres too much traffic or blah blah blah.

I'd drive a stick even if I drove in bumper to bumper traffic 99% of the time. I don't even consider looking at or buying a vehicle without a manual transmission. That's one major reason why I've stuck with Nissan products.

I think it's pathetic that some manufacturers only offer the manual in the "base" vehicle, and force you to get the automatic in the upgraded vehicle.

I guess what I'm saying is if you have to ask, then just get the automatic.

Is the auto for the sedan same as the Q45 or is that just the auto for the coupe?

Ryoken, how can the tranny for Q45 and the G35 be the same. The Q is a 4.5 liter V8 and the G is a V6. I haven't ever heard of a manufactuer matching bolt patterns for differant block sizes let alone two very differant engines. Just seems weird to me.

I’ve heard lots of people say that the G35's AT trannies are from the Q45’s. But I haven't seen an "official" documentation from Infiniti to back this up.

Hmmm, my local Infiniti dealer told me the same thing about the Q45 tranny being used in the 5AT G35.

What they said. I said, "supposedly."

RE: 6-speed autos -- not available in something in the G's price range, I believe - and just starting to come out. And I thought Audi's "6-speed auto" was a CVT that fakes 6 gears. Or do they have another?
