Any 05 clutch failures?

I've been reading this forum for a week or so now to learn about the G (I'm hoping to get one in the next week or two). I've read through some threads about clutch failures in the 03 and 04 G's, any problems in the 05's yet? Were there any changes made to the 05's clutch/tranny? I thought I'd read somewhere that the shifter was changed to allow easier shifting...

The '05 received triple-cone synchros for 1-3rd gear, and previous models had 2nd only. That should help against grinding. The pressure plate is also totally different... the clutch still engages as high as ever, but it's much lighter. Yeah the clutch may or may not chatter occasionally, but it seems normal for the G. Just enjoy your car and don't worry about it

Off of infinitinews.com:

"The close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission offers an improved shifter for better feel during shifting."

What is clutch chatter? I have had 4 different manual cars and I'm not sure I'm familiar with this?

Like someone said, clutch chatter is one of the characteristics of the 6MT

Just do a search and you'll come across TONS of threads on clutch chatter..

Clutch chatter is a characteristic of a $37,000 car? How does that make the least bit of sense? My cheap as dirt first car, 4 cyl ford probe, didn't make any noise for the 3 years I had it.

Has any of this changed in the 05? Is any of it do to modding, as in if I keep it stock will this happen?

Ive replaced 2 clutches on 05 g's. Each of them the owners had adjusted the pedals themselves. One had only 1700 miles, the other had 6500 miles. I drove a manual 05 earlier this week that already has 22K miles and it didnt have the slight grinding that ive seen in most 03-04's.

Most of the people that have the chatter have had it since new, and that's with proper clutch break-in. Just go and testdrive a 6MT and see if you can feel it. Mine only chatters every once in a while as I push in in 1st, might be just my imagination. You start getting paranoid about things after spending too much time on here. Other people say they feel the chatter as the clutch starts engaging. Don't know where the truth is.

22k on an '05 being that they came out barely 4 months ago? And what's the deal with adjusting the engagement point? Does it mess up the transmission that fast?

Civic: Yes, from what I'm finding out it does. They are mechanically the same for the most part. I'm starting to have some doubts about this car now, but everyone seems to love the car so much in spite of small issues like the chatter. I just hope I can hear it when I test drive so I know what I'm getting...

Yeah, I couldnt believe someone could put that many miles on a car in that short amount of time. From the history in infintinet he bought it in texas and its been serviced twice in North Carolina , other minor services all over the country and its been in twice for warranty work at the dealer in texas where he bought it. The reason he was in to us is for a nail in a tire, oil change, sunroof squeak, and keyless remotes not working. Maybe he has a lot of mistresses and the only way to have them not know about eachother is if they are all over the place.

According to infiniti adjusting the pedal lower is popular with "the kids" because they like the lower pedal for racing around and what not. Changing the pedals position from the stock location will either allow less or too much movement of the clutch. To lilttle movement and the clutch will not be fully engage, too much and the pressure plates "fingers" will mash into the clutch disc and the clutch fork can get hung up on the input shaft.

although clutch issues may seem common on a message board, i wouldnt let that deter you from buying a G35. like with any car (sports, luxury, or otherwise) there are always "common" problems that pop up. although you might find some posts on clutch issues, i would say that these are definitely the minority...or else we'd have 1000 posts saying "hey my clutch works great, how bout yours" for every 1 "my clutch sucks!" posts.

IMO anyway

The clutch chatter is not a characteristic of a $37,000 car, but one of a clutch/tranny design. The flywheel is the culprit. I've heard Corvettes have the same setup and noise and that's a $50,000 car. Now does it make sense? Even though the G35 is a luxury car, it tends to have strong sports car traits (six speed tranny, LSD, 18" wheels, etc), thus making it a true "GT". If it bothers you that much, get an auto.

Gran Tourismo: Though there are many interpretations; generally speaking, a true GT car is one that is powerful, handles like a sports car, seats four, and contains luxurious items such as stereos, climate control systems, and things like nav. systems etc. In a GT car, comfort and sport go hand in hand. True, hard-core sports cars on the other hand, often do not have luxury items that weigh down the car, nor do they have parasitic systems that reduce power such as AC, and etc. Look at the LOTUS Elise: very basic amenities, all business.
