Gas Left indicator on Nav?

Gas Left indicator on Nav?
Can someone explain to me the number of miles left on the Navigation info screen. Is this number the actual miles left until the tank is empty or is there a certain amount of gas left in emergency reserve when that number hits 0. Thanks for any help, just curious.

I think the NAV is REALLY inaccurate when it comes to gas mileage. I reset my mileage tracker on my tach everytime I get gas. According to my NAV I average about 19mpg, and if you do the math... 20 gallons X 19mpg=380mpg! But in reality I only get about 310 per tank before the NAV says I need more gas. And when I refuel, I have never been able to pump in more than 17 gallons. Obviously I have 3 more gallons which is 57 more miles...The odd thing is, my gas meter on my tach shows empty too! Shoudlnt the gas tach show a little more than empty?

Both the gas gauge and the nav meter are worthless.
I just pretend that I have a 17 gallon tank, and that I average 20 mpg, and so when the trip odo says 340, time for me to fill up. My system works like a champ. I've never come close to running dry, and there is never a question about how far I can go before I have to refill.
I've never put more than 19 gallons in, and sometimes my gas light comes on before 340 miles, and sometimes it doesn't, but I usually put 17 - 17.5 gallons in.
I haven't trusted fuel gauges since I once ran a wing tank dry on a solo cross country when I was learning to fly. Every one of my cars has had the same ridiculously inaccurate fuel gauges.

now as far as the readings from the navi. they have been DEAD ON ***** ACCURATE. how did i come to that conclusion... filled the tank to the top , exhausted a majority of the gas then refilled. devided miles driven vs gallons added and the number was spot on.
I have no idea whats happening with some of the other members , perhaps they have the gas tank problems mentioned in other threads ?

man guys....
Tank is 20 gal (from bone dry - don't go there)
My Nav is dead nuts everytime, the meter in the tach is a little iffy through the range.
Let me see if I can explain...
The Nav tells you your average MPG (if it says you got 19MPG and you put in 17 Gals to fill it then you should have traveled 323 miles.... duh)
The miles left is much more dynamic. It should tell you '0' right at 2 gals left (18 gals used) where the meter in tach will say empty and turn on the 'need gas pumpo icon anywhere between 2 and 3 gallsons left.
The Miles left display on the nav is much more dynamic as you get lower and lower., and based on mostr recent driving. Let me see if I can offer an example.
You have been crusing along at a perfect 20 MPG for 300 miles (you have used 15 gals) thye Miles left will show 60 miles (3 more gals at 20 MPG.... leaving the 2 gallon reserve)
BUT....... if at the same 300 miles after a perfect 20 MPG, you stuff it in the floor so you are getting 5 MPG and hold it there the Miles left will rapidly approach showing much less miles left like 15 or 20(3 gals at 5 mpg) if you ease up and cruise again it will start to climb again.
It is telling based on a much shorter integration period the estimated use left.

The "miles left" meters in general are always calibrated to give you some buffer. You could probably go more than 50 miles on "0 miles left" until you go dry. All it is a calculator on your mpg. They intentionally calibrate it this way because there is always people who push it and they don't want someone run out of gas because of a slight miss calibration.
