Handbrake

Ok I am pretty sure that my hand brake needs to be adjusted. I usually do not leave the car in gear and tend to rely on the handbrake unless I am on a steep grade. It seems that even when I am on a slight hill If I dont crank up on the handbrake I start to Roll. Checked the manual and it says 6-7 clicks should do it but I'm up around 12-13 to make it effective. Anyone else have this experiance?

Re: Handbrake

Gforcei,

Can I make the suggestion that you put your car in gear from now on...? I used to be the same way and only use the parking brake...and it only takes one time to forget...especially in a parking space that you think is on flat ground...this happened w/ my old car...parked my car, went up to the apartment and 5 minutes later got a call from the front office that my car was "blocking the exit gate." Not so good...needless to say, not only was my car f*cked up, but the two others it rolled into as well...needless to say it was a pretty expensive mistake and trust me...it will never happen to me again...I always leave my car in gear and put the brake on now.

Re: Handbrake

I use the suspenders and belt solution (in-gear and handbrake). I just made it a habit and I never have a problem.

Re: Handbrake

I agree that the car should be in gear when you use the handbrake, but the brake should be more effective with less effort when engaged. If there's a fix for this, I would like to know.

Re: Handbrake

Not only "in gear" but in 1st or reverse. you'll notice, if you care to experiment, that if you put your car in a higher gear on a hill without the handbrake (engine off, of course) and let out the clutch, most likely the car will move forward (or backward, whichever way the hill is facing).

Also, I'm not sure if this is true or where I read it, but supposedly you can adjust your brakes (maybe not including the handbrake) by backing up and applying the handbrake. I know it used to be that backing up and applying the footbrakes used to adjust the wheels.

Anyone have any current info on regular brake adjustment?

Re: Handbrake

There is an adjustment but has to be done at the dealership.

Re: Handbrake

I had the same problem. It seemed like I had to practically rip on the handbrake to get to engage on a hill. I took it to the dealership and they said (surprise, surprise): "It's fine." Well, my other cars don't have difficulty staying put on the hill. Solution is as outlined here -- torque on the e-brake and leave the car in 1st or reverse.

Re: Handbrake

yeah i prefer to leave mine in reverse+handbreak, the reason i choose Reverse rather than 1st gear is because that gear is used MUCh less than first, so i dont want 1st gear to wear out before the others do (especially the notchiness, i wouldnt want 1st gear to be gooey but then all the other notchy)

Re: Handbrake

I only put it in gear when I am on a definate hill. It's a habbit for me to leave it out. I dont think I can change. In the manual however it does say the number of clicks that the handbrake should need to grip and I am way over that so I figure it needs to be adjusted but I guess the dealership will determine that one and if it doesnt I suppose I'll have to break an old habbit. I must say I did expect the handbrake to be tight and not sloppy like it was in my last car. Hopefully It can be adjusted and al will be well.

Re: Handbrake

Not fine. Go elsewhere and have them adjust it bro. Those cables stretch, so they put adjusters in them to compensate.
