New Rear Tires at 17,000 Miles
New Rear Tires at 17,000 Miles
I went in for routine service and was surprised to find my rear rear tires were bald in the center of the tread.
Two questions:
- has anyone else experienced this level of tire wear
- because my tires were only bald in the center, should I reduce pressure below the OEM recommendation of 30psi?
Thanks gm

17,000 miles is pretty good for the stock performance tires. I just reached 21,000 and mine need to be replaced, but the previous owner must've driven the car like an old lady! I bought the car at the 15,000 mile mark and have put some pretty considerable wear on the tires
the obvious reason is that high performance tires arent a long life tire.
the reason why its only bald in the midle of the tire could be you were doing burnouts, the area where you live gets the road surface and thus your tires extremely hot expanding the compressed air inside the tire, or you drive for long distances at a single time.
those are my possible reasons. if none of those apply then i dont know

if they're down the center...sounds like they are over-inflated.
Performance tires, esp the summer performance tires, are not made to last that long. I'm suprised you got 17,000 out of them. Usually if you're an agressive driver you get about 10-12k. The all weather performance tires may last a bit longer. It depends on how much performance you want to sacrifice for longer life.

I've got almost 23K on the original 18's. They look to be OK for another few thousand, but the noise is almost unbearable! From my research the pilot sports are still suppoed to be the best, so I will replace them with the same thing. To me, getting +/- 25k miles on ultra high performace tires like these is acceptable.

I have almost 24,000 miles on my G, but am no where close to replacing the tires. The center tread is still very much there. So I am doing pretty good. I almost think that I can get 30,000 miles out of my stock tires.
I do drive a lot on the highway, however, so that may be a reason. Also, isn't 35 psi the recommended tire pressure, when the tires are cold? I have mine inflated to 37 psi.

Tread depth has very little to do with when a performance minded driver replaces tires-------when the compound " durometer" hardness measures a radical increase so that friction diminishes......usually when tread depth drops to half [4.5/32 ~~0.15"].
