a) They test the rated gas mileage with CAGS enabled. If you choose to disable it, its not like you get a new window sticker with your new gas mileage written down on it. Obviously, your gonna not get exactly the listed gas mileage if you disable cags, as they rate the car WITH IT ON. The point I was making was the great city mileage they get is rated with cags enabled.
b) The G has 5 running gears, and 1 overdrive. The T56 has 4 running gears and 2 overdrives. Dont believe me, lets compare ratios
The G35
1st: 3.79:1
2nd: 2.32:1
3rd: 1.62:1
4th: 1.27:1
5th: 1.00:1 <---- This is your "highest" possible ratio without being overdrive
6th: 0.79:1 <---- This is OVER drive..... note its <1:1 thats what over drive is
The T56 Transmission (Z28, Firebird, Vette, GTO, etc)
1st: 2.66:1
2nd: 1.78:1
3rd: 1.30:1
4th: 1.00:1 <----- Note this EQUALS our 5th gear ratio
5th: 0.74:1 <---- overdrive!
6th: .50:1 <---- huuuuuuge over drive this is why a 5.7 L can get GREAT highway gas mileage.
So anyway, what assumptions were there? As I said... The G gets A gas mileage, and the GTO gets B gas mileage by using "tricks" I guess you could say. It HAS the low end tq to have TWO overdriven gears giving it highway mileage. It has CAGS to get its rating to stay under the gas guzzler tax (as z06ified had said) and get its ratings higher. I was in now way bashing the two things. All I was saying was, its apples and oranges to compare a vq's gas mileage to a ls's gas mileage. When all things are equal, Gearing and computers give that pushrod its great gas mileage. Im not bashing in anyway, believe me, I wouldnt bash an engine that is all about raw power... its a great thing. I was just saying, if your gonna "compare the two in terms of mileage" remember its not that the V8 doesnt drink alot of fuel, its that there are systems in place to get it to that gas mileage.

G35 Coupe(6 speed): 3.538
GTO (6-Speed): 3.46
The G35 has a higher final drive ratio, but this doesn't even come close to making up for the gearing advantages in the transmission that the GTO has.
I can also support the claim based on experience that a newer Vette/Camaro/Trans-Am/GTO will get 27-28 MPG on the highway. From what I saw, their city fuel economy was not as efficient as a 350Z/G35-Coupe unless you really went out of your way to baby the car, even more than CAGS tries to get you to do.

The GTO is really boring to look at but great bang for the buck. I was really tempted to pick up a leftover '04 (dealers out here were blowing brand new ones out for 24-26K) but I figured the '05s wouldn't sell very well either and the extra 50hp from the LS2 would make it worth the wait.
I don't think anyone really buys a G35 or GTO for fuel economy either.
You know what is crazy? The C6 Corvette gets better gas mileage than my 122ci S2000.

It was a show dedicated to the GTO. So guess what??? The GTO won. They were showing the GTO Drifting all around the race track. The GTO beat all the cars in the comparison in 0-60, 1/4 mile. The BMW and G35 coupe beat it in the slalom. Also, they compared it to the base G35 without the Sports pkg. They didn't state what transmissions they were using in the other cars. I'm assuming slowmatics vs the GTO's 6 speed.

As I posted on the other speed/gto thread, it was one huge GTO infomercial and one huge waste of time. GTO’s a nice car, but the review/true comparison weight of this show is equal to a grain of sand. I had my pc record it because I wasn’t home so I have it in AVI, but it's not worth watching unless you like infomercials or the GTO

It really isn't worth watching. Its an infomercial for people who aren't really car people but either think they are or think they want to be.
As for the test results, the spped/pontiac web page says it was an 05 6MT...which is a lie.
I think they had to put an auto in the test so the GTO would win the road course portion.
