Deposit refundable?

I ordered a 6mt coupe and put a $500 deposit down. I am thinking of buying the car else where. Is the money refundable?

Usually not. This may depend on the dealer and with what options you ordered the G.

With me ordering a no Prem. Pkg 6MT, one dealer wanted as much as a $1500 deposit. Austin Infiniti only required $500. Neither would be happy with me cancelling my order... ...but luckily we won't have to deal with such a situation.

The dealer I bought my car from wanted $500 deposit to hold the car. It said "nonrefundable deposit" on the top of the page. It was refundable once the car finally sold.

I deal with contracts everyday, and there was no way I signing that paper! I fi lost it, I lost it. Infiniti will make another one. What I found objectionable was that they wanted a "nonrefunable" deposit yet we hadn't even negiotated a price or trade-in value.

In the end, it didn't matter, i bought the car 5 days later.

Be careful and don't be anxious. Make sure you read all of the agreement.

He may or may not refund your deposit. Go talk to him. Usually they're not returned.

The only reason you should be paying a deposit is if you're ordering a new one.

And regardless if it's a non-refundable deposit, it should be applied to the sale of the vehicle.

It really depends on the salesperson and the gm. When i ordered mine, we had a verbal agreement that if things didn't work out the way i wanted to, they will refund my deposit.

Everything worked out great and no need to refund.

I would think deposits are usually NON-refundable as placing a deposit tells the salesman you are serious about aquiring a vehicle, they will start "looking" for your car, options, colors, looking at other dealership's inventories, etc....if you were a sales guy, would you start start looking around, working to get someone a car without a deposit? Then have this guy walk on you? It's normal business practice to get a small deposit as far as I know. I put down $500 on my G, the only condition I had on getting my $500 back is if I didn't get my car by the end of May (I ordered/place my deposit on Feb 24/05...took delivery of my G on May 7/05)

Good luck anyways

I placed my order with one dealer and put down a deposit. I later decided to purchase from antoher dealer, and the new Infinit dealer told me that all deposits are refundable by law. I got my money back no problem.

I didnt sign any paperwork. The deposit was done over the phone with a credit card. Can anyone else confirm that the deposit is refundable by law? Its not the first time I heard that.

i believe that if you never signed any paperwork, the deposit should be refundable. if they refuse, you can ALWAYS contact your credit card company to dispute the charges. and in which case, you WILL win since you didn't even sign the credit card receipt.

My friend who sold Acura's in Illinois always used to tell me that its always really easy for customers to get back their deposit if they want to back out. I assume its probably close to an escrow when you are buying a house, yes technically if you back out seller keeps the escrow, but 99% of the time your lawyer could get it back if you wanted to back out.

By law, no matter by phone or in-person, you can get a refund. You could even take ownership of the car and return it within 3 days after you drive out! By law you can cancel any order you place and get refunded. Don't let the dealer tell you any bullsh!t. They will try but tell them you know the law & all deposits are refundable no matter what!!

I love it when people who have no idea what they are talking about do it so authoritatively. He may well be right about the law in NY, but each state has its own laws. Check into your own state's laws regarding deposits and whether they are refundable or not.

They have to give you the money back. They will tell you when you put the deposit that you can't get it back, but they have too. A dealer told me that I had to buy the car when i put my $1k down, i later found it cheaper and told the guy i wanted my money back......i got it back and I found out later that they have to give it back unless you already received delivery of the car.
