Tank overflowed at the Gas station today!

I ran my fuel real low this week to see how many gallons I have left after my navigation unit say's I am at empty or "****". I drove about 5-10 miles after the " **** " was displayed and while I was filling up my gas the fuel stopped at about 7 1/2 gallons! So I took the handle out and put it back in the tank and it started refueling. It got to 15, 16, 17 gallons and then I heard the gas getting close to the max and I thought it would stop....nope....it started gushing out all over the side of my car and my tires! I hurried up and turned off the nozzle as I had the clicker leverer thingy locked in.

I then took some of that gas station liquid and squeezy and washed the side of my car. My car was just washed today too and I know the gas can mess up my paint.......I don't know if i should get it re-washed again and why did this happen? Has it happened to anyone else?

i dunno what happened but the exact same thing happened to me last week. however i went in the store and got a bottle of water and used the blue towels that they provide at the pump. if anyone has any ideas about this i am sure it will help people from running into this problem again.

Wouldnt that be the pumps fault and not the car? I mean the pump is supposed to sense how high the gas is in the tank and supposed to stop at a certain point... in both of your situations the pump did not shut off. Sounds like the pump is at fault.

I dunno, but I like many other g owners have had issues with the fuel sensor. For some odd reason it doesn't let me fill the entire tank up every once in a while. I will literally have to shoot the gas into the car without sticking the nozzle all the way inside the hole. So yes I have gotten gas on my car because of this issue and it sucks royally. Could be worse though.

Agreed. Happened to me when I was being stubborn and doing the "top-off after the click shabang". Needless to say, it gushed out the side and ran down the side of my car...but I grabbed napkins and quickly wiped it off...I was sorta worried but didn't notice any discoloration plus my car had like 3 layers of wax at the time so hopefully that helped out a bit...just wash ur car and wax it.

What do you mean? The little gas tank people have to see when the level is full and when it is theyre supposed to send an email over to the little pump people inside the pump and tell them to stop pumping.

Chaz, the exact same thing happened to me when I first got my car. I had the trigger on auto (where the gas pumps until your tank is full)...once I heard my gas tank filling up, I looked at the pump waiting for the numbers of gallons of gas to stop rising. Well, it never stopped any went all over the side of my car. I was so pissed. The next time I went to the gas station to fill the tank, I took the pump out of the holder (without touching the trigger) and gasoline went on the side of my car again. The gas just came out for no reason. I was soo pissed.
I've also went to pump gas a few times and I can only pump a gallon and then it will stop. So sometimes I end up "trying" to pump gas for 10 minutes. Luckily, I haven't had problems in the last month.

One common thing Ive heard you all say is you use the auto pumps. Well in MA they dont have those, maybe its for that reason, but you have to manually hole the trigger till it clicks. I usually wegde my gas cap between it to keep it running auto, but thanks to this thread, I think im going to start holding it from now on

Dude,
Your Paint Is Phucked. The Gas Is Going To Eat Up The Area And You'll Start To Notice A Discoloration Within 5-10 Working Days. Once The Gas Touches Your Paint Job, It Automatically Soaks Into The Finish.

Wow, Sorry Man. Better Luck Next Time......
