HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
One of the guys at my work just got a Subaru WRX STI. This thing is fast - one of the car rags give it 0-60 in 4.8 sec.
I looked up the specs, and its 300HP, 300ft-lb Torque, and a curb weight of 3263lbs. (I thought the car was alot lighter than that - guess not.)
Now the G35 is 280HP, 270ft-lb, and 3435lbs. So does that mean if we could add 20HP and shed 175lbs, then our cars would be that fast??
Something doesn't seem to add up here???

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
It has to do a lot with the AWD. If we had the same power, same weight, the AWD will always jump ahead enough to get you in the ¼ mile, cuz you can rev the engine higher with out slipping as a normal RWD would.
Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
No matter how much money you throw at the G, the STi will be faster. The AWD and the gearing on that car are very aggressive and I'd bet that with a couple hundred dollars that car can be even faster. My cousin is buying one next month, I'll let you know just how fast it is with a bad driver behind the wheel! Maybe I'll teach him how to drive it....

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
Our G's are lucky if we could take out a stock WRX man... That AWD is one serious thing.. And a stock WRX has a mear 230 to 40 some hp...lol
Don't think we'd ever be near STI status unless we had a Twin Turbo upgrade... but I have a good feeling the STI would still rip us up even if we had a twin turbo since our 280 hp G's' can't even beat a bone stock WRX non STI ...lol

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
Yeah unless we took a WRX from a roll, I don't even think a G could take a stock WRX. That AWD is serious stuff and with a good driver behind the wheel of the WRX who can take full advantage of it, I don't think the G stands a chance to 60. And against STi, the G doesn't even have a prayer.

Whoa now Balzy, I wouldn't go that far. I guarantee you adding a Stillen supercharger to the G35 would be plenty enough to leave an STi in the dust - to say nothing of the possibilities with intercoolers, turbos (obviously not in conjunction with a supercharger LOL), NOS, engine management enhancements, exhaust, etc. Seriously, the STi is a nice car and very quick, but to suggest it's unbeatable is preposterous.
As for the original question of HP to weight ratios, it's one very good measure of a car's expected performance, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Balzy pointed out one other very important factor that HP/Weight can't account for: Gearing.
Given a set motor and transmission, just changing rear end ratios alone is enough to make the difference between a 13 second 1/4-mile car, and a 30 second timeslip.
Further, Hp/Torque ratings in conjunction with available RPM's make a difference... If you take say, a G35 engine that produces 280HP/270ft/lbs torque, and match it against a rotary with the same HP/Torque specs but a 10,000 RPM redline (regardless of peak power points), the rotary will have a higher top speed than the car with the G35 motor - even if gearing and weight specs are identical. They may be close in 1/4 mile times, but top speed would be drastically different.

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
Ahhhhh, now I see why so many are hot for a proposed AWD G35 in the future.
The STi is a wicked fast car, but for the money, I'm more happy with the G. Something about driving an Impreza just doesn't go well with $33k.

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
My buddy has a STI, traded his old 02 WRX for it. Added a boost controller and is in the low 11's at 3 psi above stock boost.... And that's not even his racing boost...lol
NO WAY in hell we'd stand a chance stock. If we add a supercharger or twin turbo we'd still get smoked... My friend is gonna add just 1300 bucks worth of more small things. Basic bolt on mods like he did to his 02 WRX which most he got outta it was 12 sec's in the 1/4 mile...
He said after those basic mods he's going to have a 10 maybe 11 second car. No matter how much we add to our G that STI, hell even a slightly modefied 02 WRX will spank us...lol

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
The best I have seen for a stock WRX is 14.3X so a 6MT coupe could take it with a good driver.
Here is a video made by local people at the meet we have every week(they make a vid with different ppl every week), at the end(11:00) you can hear the results of the races from a standing start STI vs 350Z.

Later that week they did it again from a roll on the highway and the 350Z wasn't far behind at all.

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
Hahaha, yeah Munchy really needs to practice alot...he's a kid everybody likes to make fun of but still we all like him.
Like I said we have a meet with a few 100 cars every thursdays and thoes vids are alot of fun because we get to know all the new users of our locol board.
Back to topic: Even if the STI is faster than our Gs I prefer driving my car to a poor quality fast car.

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
If the G were to have have AWD, it would be nissan's ATESSA system (spelling?) which is found on many of their vehicles these days. Its basically rear-wheel drive but when needed, will shift some power to the front wheels, i believe up to 50% of the power can go there

Re: HP-to-Weight Ratio question?
Umm...I disagree, I have beat every WRX I have raced (only 2) but walked both of em. And one of them is a friend of a friend who has a bit of money in it. After I raced him he couldnt believe my car was stock, he swore I had a blower on it or was atleast spraying...but the STI...stock for stock..I know we dont have a chance. However wait till we start seeing some perf proven parts out there for the G. Then its a whole new ball game.
