rpm needle bouncing...

is it normal for the rpm needle to bounce as you let you foot off the gas?

i own a 05 AT, and when im stuck in traffic on the freeway, or just driving around town normally, whenever i let my foot off the gas to slow down, the rpm needle will drop down very quickly, and hit like 800 rpm or 1100 rpm, then bounce back up a couple hundred rpm. is this normal?? i dont remember if it is normal for the needle to do that or not, but i figured since it was dropping rpm so quickly, i guess the needle wouldnt be able to stop "on a dime" so to say. and it doesnt react that way if i just sit in neutral and rev it.....and also, it idles perfectly in park at 650-700rpm

im not sure though, anyone know?

driving a 5AT myself, I've also seen this happen. This only happens in high gears (4,5. sometimes 3). I'm prettysure tis is normal? You were in the manual mode? Or... just automatic? I dont remember seeing it in the full auto mode.

just AT mode. and with mine it seems to happen when in lower rpms, like when you stuck in traffic, or driving the speed limit around town.

That sounds like the rev-matching feature that the 05 automatics have.

It's raising the engine rpms to make the downshift smoother.

It's quite normal. The gauge is reading the engine rpm's which drop quickly, maybe too quickly and then has to jump back up causing a little bounce.

Yes, when I lift completely off the gas I can feel the drivetrain braking the car.

you will see the Rpm increase as the car slows and unlocks the converter and shifts to a lower gear, thus increasing the engine rpms
