2004 coupe and its tranny

Hi all,

1st time posting. I'm in the process selecting a vehicle and torn between the Z and the G. I scanned through the posts and seemed to me that you all favor the G over the Z. But most of you wanted the G just because it has 2 extra seats. I need help with these 2 questions. If the extra seat is not needed, would you still favor the G? And with so many of you reported the problem with the tranmission, is it going to be fixed with the new model, 2004? Thanks in advance

Definitely the G over the Z. The G has a lot more class to it...since it's a luxury-sport car.

Second...the tranny on the G and the Z are the same...if you get a bad one...it won't matter which car you have. I've also heard from a friend down here who works at Nissan that they're getting a LOT more tranny recalls compared to what I've heard about the Infiniti's.

Good luck w/ your decision.

I have a friend with a Z - he's had 2 new trannies. I'm having no problems with my 6MT. He's had his car about 6 mos. longer, so it could be that he got into it when the bad trannies were more common.

Yes I would get the G because with the Z you can't get the 18"/brembo and the leather in the same car.

Reasons (besides the back seat) I chose the G:

Styling is classier
Ride is better
More exclusivity (the Z is getting VERY common)
Handling
Dealer service
Warranty
Luxury features and amenities
Insanely comfortable seats
Usable storage space

If I didn't need the extra 2 seats, then I'd probably go with the Z. My reasons:

1. I like the look of the Z's front more.
2. Driver has a lower seating position.
3. More interesting instrument panel layout.
4. Slightly lighter car...difference is about equiv to 1 person.

I rode in one as a passenger and noticed that the exhaust note sounds a bit louder and more aggressive from the inside. Bad thing is that you can't get it with a sunroof.

But I knew I couldn't deal with the inconvenience of a two-seater, so the Z was never one of my considerations.

I could have lived with a two seats and loved the styling (especially the silverstone with burnt orange leather), but for me no sunroof was a deal breaker. Plus the g's seats are awsome.
Interestingly enough if you build a loaded z touring model online and a loaded g 6mt online you will see that the z has no price advantage. The comparasin was 37144 for the z to 37615 for the g with the g having a sunroof and brembros that the z doesn't!

Hiya!

I would still go with the G even without the back seats, which surprised me because I'm a long-time lover of the Z. I used to own a 280zx. It was stolen for parts. Sigh.

ANYway, I used the "price with options" page on Edmunds and by the time I had chosen the type of Z I wanted, all the options, it cost as much or more as the G and still didn't offer as much. Plus my insurance would be a lot more.

Subjectively, I still like the looks of the G better than the Z. And I like the additional trunk space.

If I was really hot on getting a manual and getting back that low-slung feeling that only the Z gives, I'd get the Z. But for the type of driving I do - mostly commuting in traffic - the comfort/fun/practicality mix of the G suits me better now. But I'll always have a place in my heart for the Z. Re: 2004 coupe and its tranny

Thank you guys for all the inputs so far. What makes it even harder for me is that I currently own a Z 2+2. I have not get a chance to go and test drives these vehicles yet. Just by the look, exterior, I like the Z look. But the interior, the Z is no match for the G. That's me though...Right now it's like 60% G and 40% Z. But I'm afraid I might regret later on by not choosing the Z. I'd been a Z fan all my life until the G came....

Well, the main reason to get the Z is if you love the exterior styling and the Z tradition. It doesn't have much else to offer over the G except the slightly lighter curb weight and maybe $1500 extra bucks in your pocket (although you'd think the G would have a higher resale too). And it's not that the Z isn't a great car, it's just that Nissan made the happy mistake of offering a car that does most things slightly better for nearly the same amount of money.

Think of it this way. If the G35 Coupe never existed, but the 350Z had an optional "G" package that came with a backseat, leather, moonroof, vastly improved interior quality, increased trunk space, Michelin Pilots, better warranty, VIP service, and a more exclusive body kit and badging for around $2000... would you turn that down?
