I did a 2500 mile trip earlier this year and got a clear bra before I left. The car turned into a very expensive bug killing machine thru Texas and Oklahoma, but they came off pretty well (except for some big yellow one on the bra, which took a couple of washings and the good old New Mexican sun). And I got no rock chips. As for driving 20 car lengths behind anyone else, it's just not possible most of the time, especially around cities.

Also, no seat or back problems (even sitting on my wallet, which is usually pretty thin). The biggest problem was the CD stopped working on day 1, so I was relegated to radio station hopping. Fortunately, that has since been fixed.

Just the opposite. You will be more prone to getting chips following close because the car in front of you will pick them up with its tires and throw them at you.

Beef jerky. That and Funyuns. Those are the ultimate road trip snacks.

Carry some quick detail spray in your trunk. It's handy to have on long road trips for removing bugs and stuff until you can properly wash your car.

check oil, tire pressures, etc. make sure your spare is in good condition and make sure you have good maps all the way to wherever youre going (assuming you dont have navi or some other navaid)

as far as the rock chips, nothing you can do..stay back from other traffic, especially trucks and 18 wheelers. burn a lot of your favorite cds and enjoy the trip!

A cheap preventive solution is to buy blue 3M painters tape and tape up your front end.

i drive from columbus to cleveland and back every weekend (god knows why), and as lame as it sounds, audiobooks have been the way to go for me.

The selection is not quite all there, but if you have the MP3 headunit it makes life a lot easier sicne you can simply compress the audiobooks on to 1 cd (instead of like... 15 for a unabridged book, ie harry potter)

If you're not much of a book person, the satellite radio has some interesting crap going on... ignore the nascar talk stations though. I tried and I tried, and i failed to enjoy.

And as a last resort, the G35's seats are very excellent to take a nap on. Much better than my mini's.

Oh, and if you want to look decent where you arrive, through quick detailer in the trunk after you waxed the front. Klasse works wonders, but i'm sure others will do just fine.

Orrrrrrrr take a girl with you. She can.. umm.. act as a catheder for your not so pure fluids. that'll suck up some time.

Don't get a regular bra. One of my friends got one for his 330Ci on a trip from Virginia to LA and some rocks/dust got caught under the bra and scratched the hell out of his paint. Clear bra or nothing at all. The clear bra is expensive but worth it.
