Actually, for an automatic the G isn't really 'bad'. It is slower than my 6MT (with me driving) however the older 5AT's (like the one in SFLG35's car) really is snappy as heck. The newer 2005's seem to be slower in responding to the shifts, but maybe that's why they're "better" as far as longevity is concerned?
Hey I noticed the same thig but I thought it was in my head or perhaps because I had a grounding kit. But it is not attached to my tranny.

I'm wondering if some of the lag you guys are mentioning isn't an '05 thing. Seems like there have been more posts about AT lag in the '05's then the 03/04 models. I certainly don't notice much lag on my '03 AT. For the record, before the sedan I had a 6MT coupe, and if the MT *is* faster it's only when you hit all the shifts just right, and even then it's pretty inconsequential, at least imo. The 6MT is definitely more fun to drive when you're not in traffic, though.

My 05 granny-tranny doesn't lag much - and it's no biggie once you learn to anticipate and compensate for it.

Having said that - while the differences between the two (5AT and 6MT) are small, and the quicker car will likely be determined by the driver - the 6MT is statiscally faster than the 5AT in all categories.

I still want to know what the differences between the coupe 5AT and sedan 5AT are...

IT just all depends on the way you handle it...
No it's not, they don't shift fast in stock form. It's nothing to do with the computer getting confused.

Now, I know this isnt even close to the same thing, but what would you think of the person that purchases a corvette Z06, Viper, Ferrari, Lambo, etc. with an automatic transmission.

It is all just perception of what a car should have.

most lambos and ferraris are automatics because they are sequential gearbox transmissions, and have lightning quick shifts to where it puts it ahead of the manual counterparts. Check eBay and such. I was suprised to see such a large number of Lambos, and even Ferraris are autos.

They are automatics by "function" but not in design -- they are closer to clutchless manuals. If I'm not mistaken there are no torque converters in these trannies.

For example, in BMW's SMG setup, there is no torque converter, it's more like a manual transmission that's shifted electrohydraulically by solenoids (all controlled by computer).

I've driven numerous SMG II's (e46 M3's) and they are horrible. I can shift way better than that tranny on the road, track is a different story though. It gives you better control of your car because you can use the paddles to shift and keep complete control over your car.

As they like to say on Top Gear , "Flappy paddle gear boxes are good for the track but horrible for the road"

Also don't forget maintence and repair costs are cheaper on a MT, unless you mis-shift...

i think the creative minds behind the 6mt developers would be shaking their heads in disgust reading how many people disrespect or show a lack of respect for the 6mt...

not only the quickness or the speed, but the Feel of the close gear ratio on the 6mt CANNOT be dublicated by the 5at, doesn't even come close

FACT: the VQ35 MT is a superior machine compared to the VQ35 AT
too many of your AT drivers are just not willing to accept that.

i mean yeah, if you're driving in traffic all day well, the AT may be a better choice for you, but you still have to accept the fact that the 6mt is superior machine

Its not just about the speed of shifting gears, but equaly as important, the power loss that is absorbed by an a/t's torque converter, rather than going directly to the wheels, right?

No I think he took off thinking he can smoke me..... and now considering that i have my car bumper to bumper to this guy after he took off. Does that mean I'm a good AT driver or he's just a bad MT driver? I most certainly agree that statistically 6MT edges 5AT anyday but not by the XXX car lengths that some ignorant people claim. After this experience, and again another one with a G last night, it really is the driver behind the wheel that decides performance. Now that's not to say I'm some AT superstar, Far from that, I'm just a normal typical driver who likes to have their share of fun. But it's just annoying to see that people who drive 6MT can automatically imply that they will smoke you when they can't even control their car.

Well my perception of a G is to have a granny-tranny since my wife drives it too. But even if she doesn't, I don't think it was a horrible investment.
